Eider Handicap Eye-catching horses.
The Eider Handicap takes place at Gosforth Park and is ran over 4 mile and 0.5 furlongs.
The race is a real slog fest and has been abandoned on numerous occasions over the years due to the weather. This year I would anticipate the going to be soft if not heavy with all the rain we have had in the North of the country.
Therefore we are going to have to look to horses who have stamina in their pedigree or have already proved they can go this distance and further.
As it stands there are still 21 entries for the Eider and it is proving hard to rule any of them out entirely.
The top of the market is getting fairly congested with 5 horses now in single figures.
Currently heading the market is VINNIE LEWIS. He has won his last 2 chases including a very impressive 6l win in the Sussex National in Plumpton in January.
He is certainly improving with every run and I think that the heavier the going the better for this horse.
A horse near the bottom of the weights is another one to take note of.
Dr Richard Newland has got WEST OF THE EDGE into this race on 10-5. This will likely give him a great chance. Last time out he ran a great race to get to within 3.5l of Emperor’s Choice in Heavy going at Haydock in December. If he runs up to that form again he is going to be right in the mix.
Sue Smith has an interesting contenting for the Eider in HAINAN. Typically of her horses he has ran predominantly in the North and has actually ran at Newcastle before albeit over 2 years ago. He ran a creditable 2nd there and whilst his form is not the best on show he is certainly another one who would love to see heavy in the going.
A couple of horses who may run at larger prices are last years runner up KNOCKANRAWLEY & BORIC.
Kim Bailey sends Knockanrawley again for another attempt having just failed last year to win the Eider. His form since then if you discount his last run at Haydock (PU) has been reasonable. He will certainly get the distance and is another who will love the going. I think there are far worse 20/1 shots running this weekend!
Boric comes here in I think probably the best form of his life. Since March last year he has won 2 and come 2nd three times in 8 races. This shows how consistent his form is. He also ran a really good race here against last week’s Grand National trial winner Yala Enki. His jumping is sound and again I think the price is well worth an EW punt.
Tip of the Day
I am going to tip KNOCKANRAWLEY EW although I do think he wiill go one better and win the race!
Currently available at 20/1 at most bookmakers it is worth checking place terms as they do vary (some are offering 5 places)
