Total Eclipse of the trainers again?
Can Aidan O’Brien claim his 6th Eclipse victory with Derby runner up Cliffs of Moher on Saturday at Sandown Park? O’Brien had six Eclipse wins under his belt but interestingly has only one runner in this race apart from supposed pacemaker Taj Mahal. He is currently likely to go off at 2/1 favourite. It will be interesting to see the tactics employed as 1m 2f may be Cliffs of Moher premium trip but this remains to be seen.
I think that Barney Roy will a very strong contender come Saturday. Last time out he won the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Palace. This was on very similar going (Good to Firm). Prior to that his only defeat had come at the feet of Churchill in the 2000 Guineas going down by 1 length. This is hugely impressive form.
Eminent also ran in the Guineas but came in 5th. Prior to that he had impressive form culminating in him winning the Craven Stakes in April. This gives him an outside chance.
Sir Michael Stoute has a lively contender in Ulyssses. This horse challenged all the way in the Prince of Wales at Royal Ascot and my only concern here is whether the track will suit him. Also he seemed to slightly run out of steam in the last 100 yards or so at Ascot so stamina may be called into question with an uphill finish?
I believe that Barney Roy turn over the likely favourite Cliffs of Moher. Whilst this is a step up in trip in trip his breeding suggests this is not an issue and I believe he will have enough stamina and turn of foot to see off Cliffs of Moher and claim victory for Richard Hannon.
Barney Roy generally available at 3/1 to win.
