Ascot Chase 2019 - Saturday February 16th 3.35pm Live on ITV

Ascot Chase 2019 – Saturday 16th February

The Ascot Chase 2019 sees Ruth Jefferson sends out Waiting Patiently looking to reclaim the Grade One event after claiming it in 2018.

Last year he won after a battle with the legendary Cue Card.  This maintained his 100% record on the racecourse.

Since then his only appearance on a racetrack was at Kempton Park in the King George 2018.  He was incredibly unfortunate to unseat his rider after Bristol De Mai fell at the 9th fence.  I personally felt he was travelling well at the time and the way the result panned out would have had a great chance of winning the race.

He is currently available around the 13/8 mark but I would anticipate this price going in further.

Paul Nicholls has 2 runners in the Ascot Chase 2019.  Both are quite high in the current betting market.  If either were to claim the Ascot Chase 2019 then he would emulate Martin Pipe as the most successful trainer with 4 Ascot Chase wins.

Cyrname will be hoping to replicate his last run at Ascot.  He routed the field by 21 lengths in the Class 2 bet365 Handicap Chase on the 19th January.  Interestingly though that was his first win in his fourth appearance at the track.  I think it will be interesting to see if he is allowed an easy lead to build up his confidence.  I would doubt that will be the case in this step up in class as there are others in the race who like to front run.

The other Nicholls runner is Politologue.  The 8yo comes here in fine form with 5 wins from 8 runs.  His last run saw him come 4th in the King George.  His previous run saw him claim success at Ascot by 0.5l in the G2 Christy 1965 Chase on the 24th November. A similar run would not be good enough here.

Ascot Chase 2019 outsiders?

Colin Tizzard will be hoping to see no ill-effects from the highly rated Fox Norton.  He had his first run in over a year in the G1 Clarence House Chase.  This was in all effect a match bet with Altior, although no one gave him much chance of getting close to the highly rated Henderson superstar.

Therefore by getting within 7 lengths after that period of time away shows his capability and class.

His form in 2017 was quite special.  2nd in the Queen Mother (beaten a neck), winner of the Melling Chase.  He then won the Champion Chase at Punchestown in April and then on his seasonal reappearance at Cheltenham won the G2 Shloer Chase.  Then sadly it went wrong when pulled up in the King George and was not seen again till January 2019.

I feel he is the class horse in the race, possibly even above Waiting Patiently.  At a price of 11/2 I am much more likely to look at having an ew bet on him than look at the 13/8.

Of the other horses currently still entered for the Ascot Chase I feel that they are out of their depth and will have too much to do come Saturday to be any of those mentioned above.
