Vezina Trophy Winner 2021/22 – Odds and Picks for NHL Futures

Betting on NHL futures, and maybe especially on the Vezina Trophy winner, can be both entertaining and a chance to make a profit.

As always, it’s a close race between a long list of skilled goalies from the top teams. But there is always also the chance of a goalie taking an underdog team on his back and carrying them all the way to the top of the table.

Will one of the big favourites prevail during the NHL 2021/22 season? Or will we see a big surprise when the NHL Awards are being held in June next year?

That is the question we try to answer with our top picks for the Vezina Trophy winner further down on this page. First however, let’s have a look at the current odds market.

It comes as no surprise to see Andrei Vasilevskiy topping the board. The 27-year old Russian wall has already won the trophy once, in 2019, and his Tampa Bay Lightning are back-to-back Stanley Cup Champions. A somewhat slow start to the season by the team is still a worrying sign, despite Vasilevskiy once again showing how excellent he is between the pipes.

Igor Shesterkin would not have made many experts’ lists before the season began, but with an excellent .931 save percentage so far he has bolstered his chances significantly. Can he keep up the pace until the end of the season?

After the two mentioned goalies the field thins out quite significantly. Not many of the remaining goalies can truly challenge to win the Vezina Trophy for the 2021/22 NHL season, but there are certainly a few that stick out.

Previous winners of the Vezina still playing are the two-time winner Sergei BobrovskyCarey PriceTuukka RaskBraden HoltbyConnor Helleybuck and Marc-Andre Fleury. Several of them are struggling due to injuries, speculated trades or other short-comings.

Realistically we only count Bobrovsky as a major threat, especially since the Florida Panthers have had an excellent start to the season.

Our Top Picks for The Vezina

The Top Pick: Sergei Bobrovsky at +1500 (Florida Panthers)

Our favourite pick out of the top contenders for the Vezina Trophy this season would be the 33-year old Sergei Bobrovsky. The two-time winner (2013 & 2017) made the Columbus Blue Jackets a strong contender during his stretch with the team, and he was expected to bring the same quality to the Florida Panthers as he was acquired ahead of the 2019/20 season.

Two rather weak seasons later questions were being asked about how good Bobrovsky truly still is. The answer? An immediate bounceback to the glory days.

Bobrovsky has started the 2021/22 NHL season with an outstanding save percentage of .946 and a 1.73 GAA. With the Florida Panthers having an excellent start to the season, and looking like a cup contender, so is Bobrovsky for the Vezina Trophy.

+1200 for Sergei Bobrovsky offers excellent value as things stand, but for example bet365 offers an even better betting opportunity at +1500. That’s value!

The Field Pick: +1000 for all remaining goalies

It does not belong to the usual, but the field pick feels like a great choice. There are a few names that stick out, and together creates a very strong case for betting on the field. They are:

Frederik Andersen:

The Carolina Hurricanes netminder has a great start to the season, and the team in front of him is not looking to slow down anytime soon. With a 10-1-0 start the Hurricanes are looking better than ever, and with a great defense their goalie will certainly thrive along the season.

Andersen has also shown his ability between the pipes during his years in a much weaker Toronto Maple Leafs, and he could now take the next step with the Hurricanes.

With a save percentage of .939 and a GAA of 1.74 to start the season, Andersen is a great goalie to have in the field. In fact, without the rest of the field +1000 doesn’t even sound too bad all alone.

Jonathan Quick, James Reimer, Jake Allen & Others

He might be 35 years of age, but Jonathan Quick has once again carried the Los Angeles Kings on his back. His .935 save percentage and 1.98 GAA says it all, but his lack of play time would become an issue to win the Vezina Trophy. Still, as a package deal with Frederik Andersen and others it adds value.

James Reimer and Jake Allen both suffer from the same issue as Jonathan Quick – age and playtime. Still, if their form keeps up they might get more time on the ice, and the same is also true in case of injuries. This certainly strengthens the field’s chances, even if most of it relies on Frederik Andersen realistically.

The Longshot Pick: John Gibson at +3000 (Anaheim Ducks)

John Gibson has been an excellent goalie for the Anaheim Ducks for years and years already, but he is just hitting his prime. And it’s showing!

His save percentage of .921 and 2.49 GAA for an otherwise unimpressive Ducks team is outstanding. If he can carry his team like he has so far with a 7-2-2 record with him on the ice, then the Vezina Trophy is not an unrealistic idea. For +3000 we are willing to take a shot at it!
