New Entry : Charlotte FC

Major League Soccer has announced the program format for the 2022 season, which will be the inaugural one for the new entry in the league: Charlotte FC.

To better align with the 2022 international soccer calendar, which will include the World Cup in Qatar between November and December, the MLS regular season will start earlier than usual on Saturday 26 February and will end on Decision Day on Sunday 9 October.

The MLS Cup will be held on November 5, more than two weeks before the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The teams will play a regular-season of 34 games, with 17 home and as many away games. Charlotte, who will play their home games at the Bank of America Stadium, will face twice all Eastern Conference teams and eight of the 14 Western Conference teams. The league has confirmed that Nashville SC will move to the Western Conference in 2022.The sophomore Major League Soccer club came into the league as a Western Conference member, prior to the league’s realignment in June 2020, and it will return after one season playing in the East, the league has announced.

All games from the MLS regular season schedule will be played over the weekend, except for a maximum of five full midweek rounds of games, including one in May, June and July and two in August.

In compliance with the FIFA 2022 calendar, MLS will try to avoid scheduling games during FIFA’s international breaks in March, June and September. Only at the request of a team will the MLS consider scheduling a game during the March break or the second weekend of the June break. Teams cannot request to play games during the September break in the final leg of the regular season.
