Atlanta Braves @ New York Mets / MLB 2022 Predictions & Preview

The top-two teams in the National League East face off when the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets meet on Friday night at Citi Field in Queens.

A four-game weekend series between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets has turned into a five-game series thanks to a makeup game being added to the weekend schedule.

The Mets took the first game of this massive series on Thursday night, thanks to a strong start from their power bats. Friday, the Mets look for another win that would extend their lead in the National League East over the defending World Series champions.

Atlanta Braves Overview

The Atlanta Braves gave up the first five runs of Thursday night’s game against the New York Mets and could never fully recover. Starting pitcher Kyle Wright gave up six runs in six innings, which put the Braves in a hole that their comeback attempt could not make up for.

On Friday, the Braves will aim to even this series at a game apiece to pull themselves back to where they started this series in the division race.

Atlanta comes into this game 4.5 games behind the Mets in the NL East standings after dropping a game in the standings on Thursday. The Braves are in first place in the Wild Card standings by three games over the San Diego Padres, and they hold a 6.5-game edge on the third-place Phillies in the Wild Card race.

While the Braves’ position in the postseason is not in danger, their chances in the division could fade if they continue dropping games to the Mets.

Ian Anderson is the pitcher tasked with starting against the potent Mets lineup on Friday night in Queens. Anderson is 9-6 this season with an ERA of 4.99, though he has had success against the Mets once already this season.

In May, Anderson threw 5.1 innings against the Mets and allowed just one earned run as the Braves picked up a convincing 9-2 victory over their division rivals.

New York Mets Overview

The New York Mets have been one of the hottest teams in baseball of late, winning nine of their last ten games.

During that stretch, they have scored five or more runs in seven of those ten games, as their offense has been firing on all cylinders to lift them 4.5 games above the second-place Braves in the NL East. New York scored five runs in the first three innings against the Braves on Thursday night, giving them an insurmountable advantage.

Pete Alonso has been a huge reason for the offensive success of the Mets this season, as he crossed the 90 RBI mark on Thursday night. Alonso opened the scoring on Thursday with an RBI single and added his 29th home run of the season two innings later.

If he continues to plague the Atlanta pitching staff, the Mets could continue to lengthen their division lead on Friday and all weekend long.

Taijuan Walker will get the start for the Mets in this game as he looks for his 10th win on the 2022 season. Walker is 9-2 on the season and has not lost a decision since June 7th against the San Diego Padres.

He has not allowed more than three runs since that game and will look to continue to pitch at an elite level against the defending champions in this contest.

Game Prediction

Both of these teams are among the best in the National League this season, but the Mets have been clearly better than the Braves. Walker will continue to pitch at a high level here, which will be too much for Atlanta to overcome.

Laying the runline with the Mets is the best bet for this game, as they should be able to jump out to a lead too big for the Braves to come back from.
