Roland Garros<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The French Open, also known as Roland-Garros, is the second of the four annual Grand Slam tennis tournaments. Scheduled to take place between Sunday May 20th<\/sup> and Sunday June 9th<\/sup> 2024, it follows the Australian Open<\/a> and precedes Wimbledon<\/a> and the US Open<\/a> on the calendar. The tournament and venue are named after the French aviator Roland Garros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French Open is the number one  clay court championship in the world and the only Grand Slam tournament currently held on this surface. Until 1975, the French Open was the only major tournament not played on grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the usual demand of Grand Slam tournaments and due to the surface, the French Open is regarded as the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roland Garros 2024: Men\u2019s Singles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the time of writing it is rumoured to be Rafael Nadal’s final season on the ATP tour. Nadal has excelled on all surfaces, winning all four slams, however, on clay he proved to be almost invincible on his day. The Spaniard has won a record 14 French Open titles on his way to amassing 22 Grand Slam titles. The only man with more Grand Slams on his cv than Nadal, defending champion Novak Djokovic, a 24 time Grand Slam winner, is seeking his 4th French Open title. Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz is also heavily fancied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Main Contenders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The main contenders for the men\u2019s singles title are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Novak Djokovic<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Djokovic is the man to beat on all surfaces. Despite losing in the semifinals at the Australian Open in Melbourne, the Serb is highly fancied to win a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title in Paris. Djokovic has won two out of the last three championships at Roland Garros. However, clay is not necessarily Djokovic\u2019s favourite surface. Before his victory in 2021 he had won just one French Open. However, should Nadal not be at his best, and after a long struggle with injury this is likely, then Djokovic, who has adapted his game to all surfaces, could be the man to beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2023 Djokovic knocked out Alcaraz in the semi-final and has won three out of his five meetings against the young Spaniard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carlos Alcaraz<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Alcaraz\u2019s two Grand Slam wins have come on hardcourt and grass at the US Open and Wimbledon respectively. He has never won Roland Garros and has never made it to the final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, when Alcaraz first burst onto the scene, many pundits were predicting that the French Open was the slam he was most likely to win as he was considered to be a clay court specialist. Nadal was a huge influence on the young Alacaraz and although he has been able to adapt his game to other surfaces, he remains extremely comfortable on clay and could well come away from Paris with his third Grand Slam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jannik Sinner<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Australian Open champion Sinner, 22, has enjoyed his best year to date and claimed his maiden Grand Slam win in Melbourne.  The Italian is current ranked second in the world and will be a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniil Medvedev<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Medvedev is a consistent performer who is often there or thereabouts in the majors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casper Ruud<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ruud is excellent on clay and could be a major contender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rafa Nadal<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Nadal\u2019s record on clay in general, and Roland Garros in particular, mean that he simply cannot be ignored. One of the greatest players in history on all surfaces, Nadal was almost unbeatable on clay at his peak. Injuries have serverly hampered him over the past couple of years, however, if thinks click the 14-time French Open winner will take some stopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roland Garros: Women\u2019s singles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

World number one Iga Swiatek is the favourite. The Pole appears to go up another level on clay and this, coupled with the fact that Aryna Sabalenka\u2019s power can be greatly reduced bu the slower surface, gives her a great chance. Sabalenka has been incredibly consistent so cannot be ignored, while Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina are also capable of challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iga Swiatek <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Swiatek has won three French Open titles from her five appearances in Paris. Her game is suited to clay and is highly fancied to pick up a fourth victory this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aryna Sabalenka<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Sabalenka began the year by securing the Australian Open title for the second successive season. She has been extremely consistent over the last couple of years, making six consecutive Grand Slam semis. However, her record in Paris prior to 2023 isn\u2019t great. Clay tends not to suit her as the slower surface reduces the impact of her power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coco Gauff<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Gauff has had a really consistent year and secured her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. Her first appearance in a Grand Slam final came at Roland Garros, proving that she is capable of going all the way on this surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elena Rybakina<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ranked fourth in the world, Rybakina has won two tournaments so far in 2024. The 2022 Wimbledon champion was a quarter-finalist in Paris in 2021 and cannot be ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
