Ukraine vs North Macedonia Betting Tips & Predictions

As Group C in EURO 2020/2021 kicks off we will get to see a fresh newcomer enter the stage - North Macedonia. The team makes its major international debut while their opponents, Ukraine, have been more of a rule than the exception at major level competitions. As a matter of fact North Macedonia has not been even close to qualifying for EUROs or World Cups since the nation became independant in 1996. To believe they would now enter EURO 2020/2021 and fight for a playoff spot and shock the world sounds like a far fetched idea, even if the team is slightly stronger than in previous years.

Ukraine on the other hand has managed to build a strong core with a great defense that they can rely on. The last couple of years have been fruitful for Ukraine and going up against a team like North Macedonia should suit them well. Our betting tip for the match will as such land on Ukraine winning the three points. The odds for them doing so are at the time of writing around 1.70, which we see as clear value.

Ukraine vs North Macedonia EURO 2020/2021 Game Analysis, Odds and Betting Predictions

As Group C in EURO 2020/2021 continues with its second round of play Ukraine will find themselves in a somewhat unfamiliar position - as the big favourite. There is not much speaking for North Macedonia in this matchup and the experts and fans alike are expecting the more experienced team to win the three points. We are just as sceptical against North Macedonia creating waves in their EURO debut, but the collective has shown great strength without any superstars to speak of.

For North Macedonia points from the second round is a must if they want to challenge for a playoff spot when it’s all said and done. The head coach, Igor Angelovski, will regardless of the outcome write history together with his squad in EURO 2020/2021. We can certainly expect the team to play with great pride and never give up, but that’s more than likely just about it for their debut. Ukraine will be a very challenging opponent and it’s clear the boys in blue and yellow have the edge when it comes to both top level quality and depth in the squad.

From a betting point of view this EURO 2020/2021 matchup is quite interesting. Markets such as under 2.5 goals or Ukraine to keep a clean sheet attract us, but we will still go with Ukraine as the winner. Anything but three points against North Macedonia would be unacceptable and it would also put the team in a rough spot. We simply expect the favourite to keep their nerves in check, and dispose of the EURO newcomer without much of a hassle.

Ukraine - Overview & Facts

Ukraine are in for a tough EURO 2020/2021 debut when they face the Netherlands, but the second round is another story altogether. Everybody expects Ukraine to handle North Macedonia without too much of a sweat. The question is if Ukraine will be as good playing the role of a favourite, as they are with being the underdog? Well, if their qualification to EURO 2020/2021 is to be a guide here, they sure are up for the task.

Ukraine to win Euro 2020

Ukraine qualified by seemingly having no issues at all as they won 6 matches and drew 2, meaning they went unbeaten through their group. Noteworthy is also that the team only allowed 4 goals in total, which speaks for a strong defence that has found a system that works splendidly. While Ukraine might not be the nation with the most explosive offense out there, they have proven themselves to be extremely deadly through corners and set pieces. Through this weapon and an impenetrable defence they could potentially challenge even the best teams in the world.

A few names that stick out in the Ukranian squad for EURO 2020/2021 are Yarmalenko and Zinchenko, both highly respected class players in the Premier League. The Atalanta goalkeeper, Malinovkyi and the promising youngster Mykolenko from Dynamo Kiev also stand out in the squad as great weapons to utilize for Igor Angelovski.

UPDATE: We know quite well how Ukraine got themselves a ticket to EURO 2020/2021, but how have they played ahead of the tournament? Let's have a look:

  • France 1-1 Ukraine
  • Ukraine 1-1 Finland
  • Ukraine 1-1 Kazakhstan
  • Ukraine 1-1 Bahrain
  • Ukraine 1-0 Northern Ireland
  • Ukraine 4-0 Cyprus

We mentioned that Ukraine might end up in matches with some goals, but we have to take a step back and reconsider that after seeing their play in 2021. The Ukranians have drawn 1-1 in four games, and while that's good when you play France, it's the opposite when Kazakhstan and Bahrain stand on the other side of the pitch.

The positive is that Ukraine has shown a very, very solid defence that is well equipped to tackle the best at EURO 2020/2021. The drawback is the issue with scoring, even against weaker opponents.

Ukraine at EURO 2020/2021

Ukraine started off with their toughest match of the group stage through facing the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Andriy Shevchenko's team faced initial struggles, but still managed to keep the score to 0-0 in the first half. While no one knew it then, it sure was the calm before the storm. Wijnaldum and Weghorst gave the home fans double reasons to celebrate, and as the clock had reached about 60 minutes it looked all but over on Amsterdam Arena. The Ukranian's did not agree...

In an almost miraculous way Ukraine clawed themselves back after a great long-shot by Jarmolenko in the 75th, and a header by Yaremchuk in the 79th. The most entertaining match of EURO 2020/2021 would unfortunately, for Ukraine, end with 0 points after Dumfries got the last word as he scored 3-2 for the Netherlands in the 85th minute. However, all things considered, the opening match was a good showing by Ukraine, who proved they have offensive tools of high class. As they now will face the two weaker teams of the group, the goal of a place in the playoff is still well and alive. Our betting tip of Ukraine winning has only got stronger, despite Ukraine losing their opening match.

North Macedonia - Overview & Facts

North Macedonia will make their EURO debut this summer after ending third in the qualification group, but managing to win themselves a spot through Nations League. In all honesty there is not much of strength to be mentioned for the team as their road to EURO 2020/2021 has been achieved by beating teams far below the standard of the EUROs. Nations like Georgia and Estonia might have been left outside for North Macedonia to qualify, but now they are going up against Ukraine, the Netherlands and Austria - a different story to say the least. The small nation enters EURO 2020/2021 as a massive underdog, and maybe this is the only bright side for Igor Angelovski to work with - North Macedonia simply has nothing to lose and all to gain.

One win, or even a point, would be a success for North Macedonia, but their best chance will appear in the debut game against Austria. Depending on the outcome of that match the scenario against Ukraine will potentially be quite different. If North Macedonia arrives with 0 points they will have to go for it all, and leave nothing behind. However, if they have managed to win a point or three in their opening game, they can play it safe against Ukraine to potentially snatch a crucial point.

North Macedonia to win Euro 2020

We have seen massive surprises in the EUROs before, and no one will forget Greece winning it all in 2004 any time soon for example. One thing is for sure - for North Macedonia to be anywhere close to repeating those kinds of feats, a super solid defence is what’s needed, but there is no real indication of that being the case here.

North Macedonia qualified for EURO 2020/2021 through a 1-0 win and a late goal scored by the national hero Gordan Pandev against Georgia away. That clean sheet was crucial, but the opposition coming towards them this summer is of a whole other level. Still, that will be what North Macedonia and Angelovski have to rely upon. A few names stick out in the squad: Eljif Elmas from Napoli and Enis Bardhi from Levante will without a doubt be key players. Offensively they also have Jahovic, Nestorovski and the mentioned Pandev for some decent power. However the rest of the squad really fails to impress in all honesty.

UPDATE: The North Macedonian's have produced one of the biggest upsets of 2021, but before we get to that, let's have a look at their year in full:

  • Romania 3-2 North Macedonia (WC qualifier)
  • North Macedonia 5-0 Liechtenstein (WC qualifier)
  • Germany 1-2 North Macedonia (WC qualifier)
  • North Macedonia 1-1 Slovenia
  • North Macedonia 4-0 Kazakhstan

There is no doubt that the sensational 1-2 win away against Germany is one of the highlights of football history for North Macedonia. Well, that and qualifying for EURO 2020/2021 of course. Other than that the team has shown good signs in 2021 with a close loss to Romania away, and a convincing 4-0 victory in their latest friendly. We should still take the win over Germany with a grain of salt and not draw too many conclusions. The same is true for winning over lower quality teams.

North Macedonia at EURO 2020/2021

North Macedonia started their first adventure in a major international championship with a match against Austria, which was also their best chance to win points. The match got off to a tough start as Stefan Lainer scored on a volley in the 18th minute. Things would take a quick turn however as the national hero, Goran Pandev, found a new way to write himself into the history books. After a mistake by the Austrian goalkeeper, Bachmann, the equalizer was found by Pandev, who as such scored the nations first goal in EURO history.

Through the rest of the match it was clear that North Macedonia most often were one step behind Switzerland, but not without creating a few chances here and there. Eventually the team of Igor Angelovski couldn't keep their own net clear though, as Switzerland scored 2-1 in the 78th minute, and followed up by another in the 89th to puncture the match. All in all North Macedonia showed a great fighting spirit, and on another day might have snatched a point. Now their future in EURO 2020/2021 will require a win against Ukraine or the Netherlands - can they make it? Sadly, that does not look the case, but this team will never give up, that much is for sure.

Ukraine vs North Macedonia Head - to - Head Analysis

During the 2000s these nations have played each other four times. North Macedonia managed to keep a clean sheet in two straight friendlies with one ending 0-0 and the other with a 1-0 win for the Macedonians. That was however too far back in time to consider relevant for the coming EURO 2020/2021. When it comes to competitive games it has been another story, as Ukraine has won both times - 1-0 and 2-0.

The lack of goals is clear from history, but it’s worth noting that both teams have improved their offense considerably since these meetings.
