Turkey - Overview & Facts
Turkey played an impressive qualification round for EURO 2020/2021 as they ended with a 7-2-1 score, and even if the group was not the most competitive Turkey managed to keep Iceland behind them - France proved themselves stronger than the Turks however. As Turkey only conceded three goals in 10 games it says quite a bit of the discipline and organisation of the team at this moment. One thing to note is that Turkey allowed quite a few more goals in Nations League, but the fact is that the team was experimenting and playing in a different way from the more important qualification.

Turkey consists of a whole lot of experienced players with good records from high quality teams around europe and domestically. However, Turkey has also seen an uprising of the younger generation competing for starting spots in the national team. The defence is bolstered by Caglar Söyüncü and Merih Demiral, who make their own end a rock-solid piece. The Turkey offense will be led by players like Cengiz Ünder and Hakan Calhanoglu , who will have to be at their best to bring pride to their nation in EURO 2020/2021. Without neglecting the offensive threats of Turkey, the defence still remains the best weapon without a doubt, and as a last outpost the goalkeeper Mert Günok is another strength they can rely on.
UPDATE: In the preparations for EURO 2020/2021 we have seen Turkey play three friendlies.
- Turkey 2-1 Azerbaijan
- Turkey 0-0 Guinea
- Turkey 2-0 Moldova
The teams Turkey have faced in the last month are not of the strongest calibre, but they have done well. We should also keep in mind that players have been rotated and the playstyle has been experimented with. All in all Turkey is looking ready to enter EURO 2020/2021 in good form.
Turkey at EURO 2020/2021
While Turkey began their EURO journey with a tough challenge against Italy away, hopes were high that the team could keep their opponents in check, and maybe even find a way to upset. 0-0 in halftime might have given hope despite being outplayed, but reality would hit hard in the second half. Merih Demiral was the victim of an own goal in the 53rd minute, and when Turkey moved their positions upwards for an equalizer, they got punished, twice. Immobile and Insigne secured a 3-0 win for the Italians, and Turkey was left with no points and question marks for the future.
It's no surprise that Turkey lost against Italy, but getting out shot 24-3 (8-0 on target) is a far cry from what they were hoping for in the EURO opening match. They will need to re-focus for their second match against Wales, as there is no other option than to bring in points. We can expect a completely different match, but our initial betting tip of Under 2.5 goals feels as relevant still, as Turkey failed to impress offensively.
Wales - Overview & Facts
Wales had to move mountains to grab a spot in EURO 2020/2021, and it all came down to the last round where they managed to defeat Hungary (2-0) after two goals from the experienced Aaron Ramsey. Nations League on the other hand showed Wales from a much stronger side, as they won five games and only drew one, with no losses to be seen. One goal conceded in total is what sticks out even further to show Wales is a team to be taken seriously.
Wales will be as predictable as ever if we consider the biggest threats - Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale will be the center pieces it’s all built around. Although, a player like the quick Daniel James from Manchester United could end up being the joker Wales needs in desperate times.
The defence of Wales should be mentioned too, with Ampadu, Mepham, Rodon and Davies all being Premier League level defenders.

Wales might not be the most flashy team, even with a couple of clear stars, but the depth is clearly there and with the success from EURO 2016 the confidence should be on an all time high.
UPDATE: Wales have played a fair amount of matches during 2021, consisting of two in the World Cup qualifiers and three friendlies. Let's have a look at the results:
- Belgium 3-1 Wales (WC Qualification)
- Wales 1-0 Mexico
- Wales 1-0 Czech Republic (WC Qualification)
- France 3-0 Wales
- Wales 0-0 Albania
While Wales have struggled against world class sides such as Belgium and France, they have shown great strengths in the other matches. The strong defensive fundamentals shine through especially against mid-tier opponents and we can expect that to be the case in EURO 2020/2021 too.
Wales at EURO 2020/2021
Wales were truly put to the test by Switzerland in their opening match. Their opponents controlled the match more heavily than one might have expected, and after 49 minutes Switzerland got rewarded as Breel Embolo scored a well deserved goal. Wales would however start fighting back and look for an equalizer. It was a welcome change of pace as Wales had shown close to no offensive threats prior. It would pay off too, as Kieffer Moore scored the important 1-1 in the 74th minute, which would also be the end result.
It's hard to argue that Wales would have impressed on the opener, as they lost the shots 9-18 (2-4 on target) for example. But it's still worth noting that the second half of the game was much better, and it seemed like the Welsh finally got into the game. When Turkey is up next it won't be an easy task, but weaknesses were clearly shown against Italy. If Wales can keep the better half of their opener intact they can give the Turks big issues to fight for crucial points. The Under 2.5 goals market still looks like a good choice for this one.
