Scarlets prop O’Connor in line for Wales debut

Wales have made an addition to their Six Nations squad ahead of their upcoming match against Ireland in Dublin. Scarlets’ uncapped prop, Harri O’Connor, has been called up to address the tight-head prop issues faced by coach Warren Gatland.

Gatland finds himself dealing with a shortage in the tight-head prop position due to unfortunate circumstances. Leon Brown sustained a shoulder injury during the match against Scotland, while Archie Griffin suffered a knee injury in his debut match against England.

To bolster the squad, Harri O’Connor, aged 23, has been drafted in. O’Connor, who has previously represented Wales at under-18 and under-20 levels, showcased his skills in an uncapped match against Barbarians last November.

In preparation for the Ireland match, Cardiff’s Keiron Assiratti was the lone fit tight-head prop with the squad last week, as Dillon Lewis returned to his English club, Harlequins.

Notably absent from the squad are France-based props Tomas Francis and Henry Thomas. They were not considered for selection in the Six Nations campaign following their participation in the 2023 World Cup.

Gatland and his coaching staff are faced with the challenge of managing the team’s prop resources effectively. With O’Connor’s inclusion, Wales aims to address the tight-head prop concerns and field a competitive team against defending champions Ireland in Dublin.
