Group A Summary

Roberto Mancini and Italy came to Group A as massive favourites to win the group, especially considering their home advantage. Fair to say that they met the expectations, and maybe a little bit more. The battle for second place ended up between Wales and Switzerland, who drew against each other in the first round, but both later winning against a surprisingly weak Turkey. The difference maker would be their results against Italy, where Wales lost by only one goal, compared to the three of Switzerland.

The Highlight

There is no doubt that Squadra Azzurra is the clear highlight of Group A. While expectations were for them to win all three matches, they managed to do so in a way that now puts them among the favourites to win EURO 2002/2021. The defence is as strong as ever, and the team literally refuses to concede a single goal. Simultaneously the offense is razor sharp through Immobile, Insigne, Berardi, Barella, Locatelli and all the others.

Italy are currently on a 30 match long unbeaten run, and it will take a special effort to stop this train. The first try will go to Austria in the Round of 16, and looking at the form Italy is boasting right now it does not look like they are done yet. Italy is going for gold, and the group stage is just another statement to all of Europe.

The Disappointment

There is clearly only one option here - Turkey. The squad led by Şenol Güneş entered EURO 2020 with high hopes of being a deadly outsider, with the playoffs as the minimal goal. Those dreams came crashing down fast, and it started with being completely outplayed by Italy in Rome, losing 0-3. Among experts and fans alike, the Turkish chances for success were high, and even their offense was justifiably so getting praised ahead of the tournament. WIth 1 scored goal, and 8 conceded, there is no other rating to give Turkey than a big zero. Arguably the biggest disappointment in all of EURO 2020.

Who’s the favourite in Group A?

In Group A of Euro 2020/21 we find Italy, Turkey, Switzerland and Wales. After performing very convincingly in the qualifying phase of the upcoming EURO 2020/2021, Squadra Azzurra should be able to easily confirm first place in this group, as they seem to be above the other nations. Whether we are talking about their technical quality (Bernardeschi, Zaniolo, Jorginho), their experienced players (Bonucci, Florenzi, Immobile), their coach (Mancini) or the fact that Italy will play at their Olympic Stadium in Rome, all conditions seem greatly mixed to see Italy as a winner of group A.

Behind them, the battle seems equalled, although Wales seems like the main competitor for the 2nd place. In addition to their superstar Gareth Bale, the country of 3 million inhabitants will for example count on players like Allen, Ramsey, Moore and Williams to harm the Turks and the Swiss. In decline compared to the last few years, the Swiss will have to impress if they want to reach one of the top two positions. The last performances shown by the Turks have convinced us that they shouldn't be underestimated either. The bookmakers noticed Turkey’s good shape and recently adjusted the odds for Turkey winning the EURO 2020 / 2021.
