Belgium vs Portugal Betting Tips & Predictions

Belgium against Portugal, Roberto Martinez against Fernando Santos, Lukaku and De Bruyne against Ronaldo - well, you can pick your battle. This match between two giants will be a wonder to behold, and we are hoping for an explosive match. Belgium are looking to finally win gold with their golden generation, while Portugal is looking to defend their EURO title with their old guard. One last dance for Ronaldo and Pepe perhaps…

Belgium has reached the playoffs by rather easily getting past Group B ahead of Denmark, Finland and Russia. Three straight wins with a goal differential of 7-1 tells a clear story of Belgium being on the level needed, but the question is how it will look as the big nations come knocking? This has been the achilles heel for the team in recent years - they have claimed the #1 spot at the FIFA ranking through consistently winning against lower ranked teams, and never struggling at all. However, against tougher opponents it’s a different story, and they have fallen short several times already. Can they finally make it?

Portugal on the other hand had to work until the very last minute to reach the EURO playoff. Considering that they were placed in the Group of Death with France, Germany and Hungary it’s not surprising that we ended up with a dramatic ending. In the last match against France it all came down to minimal margins as Portugal eventually managed a draw (2-2), at the same time as Germany had a late equalizer against Hungary (also 2-2). With a wrong bounce or two, Portugal could have been eliminated from EURO 2020 already, but here we are, and the reigning champions are still alive to defend their title.

Our betting tip: Over 2.5 Goals to odds 2.15+

We are basing our betting tip for Belgium - Portugal on the fact that both of these teams have excellent offenses, with deadly finishers taking any opportunity they can get. This, together with the fact that the Portuguese defence have shown clear weaknesses makes us confident there is value in this odds market. It’s no surprise that the bookmakers are favoring the under markets though, as knockout matches have a clear trend of being low-scoring, but with the odds provided we clearly think it has swung too much.

Belgium has in their three matches at EURO 2020 gone over 2.5 goals in two of them, with the last match against Finland ending with a 2-0 win. That match clearly died off due to the situation both teams were in, and for the longest time Finland tried to keep it to a scoreless draw. The chances in that match were well and beyond to reach 3 or more goals.

Portugal have gone over the 2.5 goal line in all three of their games so far. 3-0 against Hungary, 2-4 against Germany and finally the 2-2 draw against France. With a deadly Ronaldo at 5 goals in the tournament already it’s hard to see them not scoring at all against Belgium, who’s yet to be properly tested. The same seems true for Belgium though - with a deadly offense going up against a Portuguese defence that does not look stable enough against the top teams, we can expect to see goals fall.

Keep in mind that our suggestion is not based on us believing goals are by any means guaranteed, as playoff matches usually will be more focused on keeping your own goal safe. The fact is still that the odds provided are good enough to provide value. It could even be worth going for a higher line like 3.5 as there is a chance a few early goals can turn this match quite chaotic.

Belgium vs Portugal EURO 2020/2021 Game Analysis, Odds and Betting Predictions

This Round of 16 match between Belgium and Portugal will be played at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville on Sunday the 27th of June. For both teams this will be a new location, but as both have played away from home and at different locations already, this should not have any bigger impact on either of them.

Both Belgium and Portugal were ahead of EURO 2020 seen as contenders to win it all. While Portugal’s odds were slightly higher than those of Belgium, a part of that was their group draw. At this point both teams fall behind the main favourites like France, England and Italy, but we also have to keep in mind that a big part of that is that Belgium and Portugal both are fortunate to meet each other already.

The odds for Belgium to advance to the quarter finals range from 1.70-1.80, while Portugal is valued at 2.10-2.20. For us that seems like a fair assumption, and so does their EURO winner odds at 8-9 and 11-14 respectively.

Belgium - Overview & Facts

The story of this Belgian squad is the same that it has been for quite a few major tournaments now. It’s time for this golden generation to win gold, and nothing else is good enough. While Belgium won bronze in the 2018 World Cup, they also got knocked out at EURO 2016 by Wales in the quarter finals. More is demanded, and the question is if the Red Devils can finally meet the massive expectations?

Being ranked #1 in the world and going far in major tournaments used to be good enough for Belgium. That is not the reality anymore.

Belgium to win Euro 2020

Belgium is still a somewhat hard team to judge at EURO 2020. Their journey through the group stage was as expected quite easy, and while the job was done properly and you can’t ask for much more, the matches against the best is where we will see how good this team really is when it matters.

Belgium’s Five Latest:

  • Finland - Belgium 0-2 (EURO 2020)
  • Denmark - Belgium 1-2 (EURO 2020)
  • Belgium - Russia 3-0 (EURO 2020)
  • Belgium - Croatia 1-0 (Friendly)
  • Belgium - Greece 1-1 (Friendly)

The wins gathered against Finland and Russia were both expected and achieved, but how much do they tell us about the real strength of Belgium? Well not much really. The match against Denmark is more interesting in that regard, as Belgium was trailing 0-1 at halftime. To be honest Belgium got outplayed in the first half of that match, and that’s it.

A certain Kevin De Bruyne would be the big difference maker when he got subbed on against Denmark though. After a magical assist to 1-1, and later a bomb from outside the box, he quite literally turned the match around by himself. That’s the kind of individual performances Belgium needs together with strong fundamentals in the team as a whole. The Denmark match clearly showed a strength, but also a weakness in this team.

It will be very interesting to see how these things play out as the competition level rises, but it would be hard not to be a bit worried by some of the signs. Even Finland managed to shake up Belgium a few times, and clearly could have found a goal as well. Yet another reason we think that goals are more likely than usual despite being a knockout match.

Portugal - Overview & Facts

When talking about Portugal it’s impossible to not bring up Cristiano Ronaldo, so let’s just get started. Ronaldo has broken records in what feels like a daily basis at EURO 2020. Most goals in the tournament’s history, most goals in international matches ever, and he leads the top scorer standings of EURO 2020 with 5 goals with the next player being two behind. If Portugal wants to succeed it’s clear that Ronaldo needs to perform, but most of the time he does. Even when he doesn’t have a great game, he still manages to find goals out of nowhere.

All well and good in the Portugal offense that also has many other threats like Diogo Jota, Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes. There is an overload of offensive power for Fernando Santos to utilize. But offense is not the issue when it comes to Portugal, the other end seemingly is.

Portugal to win Euro 2020

Portugal went through a thriller in Group F, or the Group of Death as it has been called. The three to nil win against Hungary in the opening match might today look like an easy win without issues, but the matter of the fact was that the first goal fell in the 84th minute, and could have easily ended in a draw. If that happened we could have looked at Portugal outside the playoffs, but the margins favoured the reigning champions.

Portugal’s Five Latest:

  • Portugal - France 2-2 (EURO 2020)
  • Portugal - Germany 2-4 (EURO 2020)
  • Hungary - Portugal 0-3 (EURO 2020)
  • Portugal - Israel 4-0 (Friendly)
  • Spain - Portugal 0-0(Friendly)

We can see that Portugal has been involved in quite a few high-scoring matches as of late, and that’s much thanks to a strong offense. Rarely will this team go through 90 minutes without scoring. However we would like to argue that it’s unlikely to see Portugal keep clean sheets against top level competition too.

In the last round of the group stage Fernando Santos was probably sweating a bit extra. Portugal were at a deficit against France, and simultaneously Hungary had both a 1-0 and 2-1 lead against Germany. The scenes did fortunately, for Portugal, change towards the end, but they made the knockout phase of EURO 2020 by the smallest of margins.

As they now have passed the first step towards defending their position as European champions, it would be foolish to count them out. And funnily enough the start to EURO 2020 almost exactly replicates their run in 2016.

Belgium vs Portugal Head - to - Head Analysis

Belgium and Portugal have met each other 18 times in history, and it’s Portugal who holds a slight lead with 6 wins compared to the 5 for Belgium. The interesting thing to note however is that Portugal have not lost once in the 2000s with 3 wins and 2 draws. A big asterisk needs to be added here though, as three matches are from before 2008, and we all know that Belgium from years past is a different story than later versions.

The most recent matches are from 2016 and 2018, both friendlies, where Portugal has a 2-1 win and the other a 0-0 draw. The H2H history between these teams don’t give much of an indicator of what to expect at EURO 2020 as they are far too old, or only friendly matches.

What’s up next in EURO 2020/2021?

The winner of Belgium and Portugal will play Italy or Austria in the quarter final of EURO 2020. The match will be played in Munich on the 2nd of July. With that said it’s quite clear that both of these teams have ended up on the hard side of the bracket. Facing, most likely, Italy next is as tough as it gets, and then a potential semifinal could include the world champions, France. There is certainly no easy way around it for Belgium and Portugal - if they are to make it all the way, they have to beat the best and nothing less.
