Time is running out for Claudio Ranieri’s Roma in their quest to make the Champions League next season. Can they beat a Cagliari side that has won four of their last six?

Giallorossi improving under King Claudio

Coming home to the club he supported as a boy and the city he grew up in just makes sense for Claudio Ranieri. Revered in Leicester for all time after the most miraculous Premier League title since the completion rebranded in 1992, Ranieri will now be looking to bring success to the Giallorossi following a difficult season under Di Francesco.

They are improving with some excellent performances. The draw at Inter was a positive result even if they were unable to hold the lead and the back-to-back clean-sheets that preceded it will have delighted the manager.

He will have been keen to see his side become more defensively resilient and this will help them against a Cagliari side who are tougher to beat than many think.

Cagliari suffering from home sickness

As good as Cagliari have been at home, winning six of the last seven, they have been equally woeful on the road.

Away from the Sardegna Arena they have won just twice in 16 attempts this season which makes them the fourth worst side on their travels in Serie A.

Roloando Maran will be well aware of this problem but, as yet, has been unable to find a solution. The 4-4-2 diamond he deployed against Torino in their last game saw them look solid and the 3-0 win at Chievo was also based on this system. Luca Gigarini protected the defence well while, star man, Nicolo Barella was given licence to get forward.

Roma, however, are not Cheivo and will have a lot more attacking threat for the Rossoblu to worry about. They will make things hard for Ranieri’s side while looking to hit them on the break but given the difficulties they might find this far more challenging to pull off.

Betting tip

Despite Roma not being prolific and often unable to put teams to bed they will surely have enough to beat a Cagliari side who are about as effective on the road as a chocolate tea pot.

That is why backing Ranieri’s side to win by two goals at odds of 4.9 is definitely good value for you money.

The numbers

In terms of creating goal scoring opportunities this season the Giallorossi have been pretty good. They have created the third most chances in Serie A with 213 whereas Cagliari have only managed 137 in this metric.

When looking at dangerous passes, Roma have pulled off 237 compared to 155 from their opponents. Cagliari have been quite effective in the press stats making 505 ball recoveries in the opposition half compared to the Giallorossi’s 461, though this can be attributed to Cagliari’s diminished possession stats.

Stephan Shaarawy has scored the most goals (10) in the league for Roma, including a brilliant strike against Inter, while Edin Dzeko has created the most chances with 55.

For Cagliari Leonardo Pavoletti has scored the most goals with 12 while also creating the most chances with 42.
