Roma’s performance against Juventus offers some hope to the Giallorossi faithful that next season will be different and another convincing victory here will only add to that. So backing Roma to win by two or more goals is something you should be considering for this one!
Seven heaven for the Giallorossi
Roma’s season was heading for disaster at the end of March. They had lost three of their last four and that included the abject display in a 3-0 defeat to rivals Lazio. This was followed up two weeks later by a sound trashing at home by Napoli.
It was a poor return and could have ended their season but Ranieri managed to work his magic and started to get them playing.
They have now gone on a run of seven games without defeat and won four in that time. During those games the Giallorossi have only conceded four times and two of came in the home draw against Fiorentina.
Having sorted out the defence they have been able to win games by the odd goal and take their hope of Champions League football into the final two rounds of the campaign.
Against Juventus they relied on some brilliant saves from Antonio Mirante to keep them in the game before breaking at pace to take advantage, late in the match, of poor Juve defending to bag the points.
Where does this leave Roma?
With two games to go they are only three points behind Atalanta who travel to Juventus next. Roma themselves take on a struggling Sassuolo before ending at home against Parma.
Two wins and favours from elsewhere, could see Ranieri’s side seal the most unlikely of top-four finishes. If they don’t make it then it will be a case of reassessing for next season with Ranieri announcing he will leave at the end of the campaign.
The Roma job is bound to attract some strong candidates with Jose Mourinho out of work but it is all about the final two games for the Giallorossi.
Sassuolo’s struggles
Just two wins in the last 15 games has left Sassuolo drifting in mid-table. They have not been woeful, drawing seven of those games, but lack the clinical edge to win when they have been the better side.
They had been on a six-match unbeaten run before losing to Torino in the last round. In that game they were leading with 10 minutes remaining but were undone by two quick strikes after having a man sent off.
This season is over for the Neroverdi and they will already be planning for 2019-20 in hope of making some improvements to avoid dicing with the drop. De Zerbi will want to find a way of being more clinical but will have to do it on a tight budget as is often the case in Serie A.
