We have three somewhat solid favorites to win IEM New York Europe, but the region is a lot more balanced than CIS or NA at the moment, so there are interesting betting opportunities for you to choose from. So now we are going to take a look at the favorites to win, which teams are the real challengers, and who might be the dark horse that rises from the shadows to beat them all?
Favorites to win IEM New York Europe
The three top ranked teams in the event are definitely the favorites to win, at least from an odds perspective, but are they actually? Online CS has turned the tables big time and the rankings are all over the place which also affects the outright odds quite significantly. However sometimes that plays in our favor and it’s up to you to decide who you are going to follow. With that being said, here are the odds favorites to win:
Heroic: As stated above, Heroic has had some impressive results from their previous tournaments as they have won three straight, with one of them being ESL One Cologne that they won by a landslide. Despite the team's success, I am not convinced that Heroic would win this. As they are ranked so high now the competitors are studying their playstyle even more which means that Heroic will be challenged harder and harder constantly. My thoughts revolve around “can they evolve to stay where they are now?” and I don’t think they can.
As Odds for Heroic to win are the smallest on the market, odds for them to win series will also be relatively small too. Because of these two reasons we recommend not to bet on Heroic. Their roster is being overvalued heavily at the moment and you are better off betting against them.
Team Vitality: On a good day Vitality can be the best team in the world and ZywOo is a player who can win games or even series pretty much solo. It’s true that Vitality has not been performing too well in ESL Pro League for example, but that can be viewed as a hiccup on the road. Misutaaa hasn’t fully found himself yet, but he is a prospect with potential and talent for days. Vitality is a great mixture of raw firepower, experience and creativity. They play super entertaining Counter Strike, and as said above, they have the ZywOo factor.
Odds for Vitality to win the entire thing is relatively low, but with 3,5 odds and upwards from that it’s an easy choice to make. If you would ask me now who I think is going to win the event, I would say Vitality.
BIG: Now BIG is an interesting squad, as they have even peaked as #1 ranked team in the world this year, but that’s a bit too much to swallow if I am being honest. Yes, the roster has stayed together for quite some time now and yeah, they have had some quite decent results too, but are they really a top team in the world? Hardly. Again we get back to the online factor and a lot of teams being very shaky with their performance, but I think the challengers in this tournament are way too good for BIG to have odds below 4 to win the event.
As that’s now out there, betting on BIG to win this event wouldn’t be smart. Their odds are just too low. But there’s some light at the end of the tunnel because of that: betting against BIG is going to be valuable, as the odds are respecting world rankings and old results way too much. I honestly don’t see BIG winning this event, or the next one either.
Challenger teams in IEM New York Europe
This is where things get interesting, as you have probably noticed, I just told you not to bet on two of the odds favorites to win. The reasoning behind that decision are the challengers, a couple of these teams are probably stronger than BIG or Heroic by default, but as the bookies seem to love HLTV world rankings we will dig out the value for you.
FaZe Clan: Washed up, not good anymore, so last season, old news. You can sum up FaZe Clan in a sentence like that, sure. But. Coldzera, Niko, rain. Those three names can still be the top3 players in the world. Broky is an upcoming talent and it’s not like Kjaerbye is a bad player. FaZe hasn’t been performing on the level that’s expected of them, but I don’t honestly think there’s a day when you would value the roster of Heroic or BIG above what FaZe currently have.
Again, thanks to bookies loving the world rankings the odds for FaZe to win the entire thing are above 13 and that’s where we say “thank you”. On top of that you can get over 3 times the money on FaZe vs. Heroic for example. Betting on FaZe to upset the favorites is a value bet every time.
OG Esports: OG, OG, OG… I can understand why they are the bottom feeder from an odds perspective to win, but again, that’s based on their world ranking. Funnily enough the same ranking doesn’t apply as heavily on their odds in matches, but OG is still an underdog in every series they are going to play, or at least they will be in the beginning. They’ll start their tournament against BIG and you can get over 2 times the money with Over 2.5 maps. That trend will most likely continue and it’s a good line to bet on as OG tends to play 3 maps quite often in BO3 series.
Dark horse in IEM New York Europe
Dark horses are always a bit of a shot in the dark, as they can do something or then they can be a complete pancake too. We have picked one for this event, as it doesn’t really seem reasonable to pick more than that in a 8 team tournament:
CompLexity Gaming: Complexity’s CS:GO team has been one of the coolest stories of 2020, but unfortunately their run hit a wall a while back when their young star player oBo left the team unexpectedly. As CoL is playing in Europe it meant that the American young gun was far away from home, and he wanted to return to his friends and family, which is understandable.
Due to that it’s hard to say how Complexity is going to perform, but they are still a very potential squad. Personally, I would test out the waters on their first two series, small stakes and somewhat high odds with proper payouts seem very intriguing. If Complexity start the tournament with a bang, they can win it, but be mindful.
