Villarreal vs Bayern Munich in the Champions League on April 6, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

Villarreal vs Bayern Munich in the Champions League on April 6, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

Villarreal host Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie hoping to spring a major upset on the German giants.

After finishing ahead of Atalanta and as runners-up in a highly-competitive Group F, the La Liga outfit were superb in their Round of 16 clash with Juventus.

Going into the second leg in Turin at 1-1, Villarreal produced a stunning 3-0 victory to silence the Juve faithful, and with that result they showed their ability to get a result against the top sides in Europe this season.

However, Unai Emery’s men are going to have to produce something even more special against a well-oiled Bayern side, who coasted through the group stage with maximum points after winning six of six, scoring 22 goals and conceding just three in a group that also contained Benfica, Barcelona and Dynamo Kyiv.

If that wasn’t ominous enough, they pulled RB Salzburg apart in the last round, winning 7-1 at home to secure safe passage with an 8-2 aggregate advantage.

In turn, it’s Bayern who go in as heavy favourites for this one, and it’s hard to make a case in favour of Villarreal getting the better of them.

Bayern to win 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2

Bayern picked up 3-0 and 4-0 wins at Barcelona and Benfica respectively in the group stage, and so the Bundesliga champions are more than capable of blitzing their opposition on the road.

Having scored 81 goals in 27 league games so far this season, 14 more than the next most prolific side, it’s going to be a real task for Villarreal to shut them out and keep a clean sheet, with Bayern scoring in every Champions League game they’ve been involved in so far this campaign.

In turn, it’s hard to look past them taking a commanding lead into the second leg, and although Villarreal have been good at home and will no doubt put up a strong resistance, it’s going to take a huge effort from them to keep their opponents quiet for 90 minutes.

While they could struggle defensively, they showed against Juventus that they can score goals too and so it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if they find the mark as well.

With that in mind, we can’t ignore the odds of 4/1 (bet365) – as well available with all of the reliable sports betting sites – for a Bayern win either 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2.

Villarreal Form, squad news, opinion

Prior to the international break, Villarreal had won three of their last five league games, which keeps them in the hunt for a European qualification spot, while also producing that memorable win over Juventus in between.

That manner of victory should do wonders for their confidence, and it’s a game-changer in that they know that they can travel to the toughest sides in Europe and produce a magic display if they’re at their best.

Paco Alcacer and Alberto Moreno had both been sidelined before the break, and Emery will be hoping that there are no fresh injury concerns in his squad heading into this encounter.

While their strength is their discipline, organisation and work-rate, they do have quality in the side that can make the difference and so don’t expect Bayern to have it all their own way particularly in this first leg.

Bayern Munich form, squad news, opinion

Bayern once again lead the way in the Bundesliga, boasting a six-point cushion over nearest rivals Dortmund having won 20 of their 27 league games thus far.

As noted above, they’ve scored 81 goals in those outings, conceding just 28, which gives them the most prolific attack and the best defensive record in the German top flight.

Julian Nagelsmann will be without long-term absentees Alphonso Davies and Niklas Sule, but it remains to be seen if that’s the extent of the absentee list heading into the game.

With the quality that they have in this squad, combined with the excellent blend of experience and youth, they are primed to compete both domestically and in Europe for major titles.

In turn, this is going to be a mammoth task for Villarreal, as with the likes of Lewandowski, Sane, Coman and Muller leading the Bayern charge, it’s going to take something special for the Spaniards to produce a big upset.

These two sides have met on two previous occasions competitively, with both coming in the group stage of the 2011/12 Champions League.

Bayern came out on top in both encounters, scoring five and conceding just one, although given the time that has since passed, both clubs have seen plenty of player turnover and so the head-to-head will count for little.

The pedigree and experience that Bayern boast in the Champions League could be an advantage, but after lifting the Europa League last season, Villarreal can draw on some recent experience too and they’ll hope that’s crucial in this tie.

About the Venue

The Estadio de la Ceramica, or perhaps better known as El Madrigal, has a capacity of just over 23,000, and can be a real cauldron of a venue given the nature of how the fans are so close to the pitch.

With the magnitude of the game in mind and the desire to pull off a major coup by beating Bayern, the atmosphere will no doubt be lively and Villarreal will need the backing of their fans to spur them on this one, especially if it becomes frustrating and difficult for them with a lack of possession.

However, it’s also vital that Emery’s side bring the crowd into it by playing well, and so it remains to be seen if it becomes a factor.

As Villarreal can attest to following their win in Turin, anything is possible and they will go into this game full of belief that they’ll head to Munich with something to defend.

However, it’s impossible to ignore how much quality and experience is in this Bayern side, and the ominous nature of their form in the Champions League so far this season.

While they might be left frustrated in the early stages as Villarreal set up to keep them under wraps, back the Bavarian giants to break free of those shackles as the game progresses and emerge as comfortable winners.
