After getting the better of West Ham before the international break, Tottenham now look like they have finally stepped off the rollercoaster which was their form in 2022. Now though, they must build on that success and apply further pressure on their biggest rivals.
To do that, they must get the better of a Newcastle side that have lost their last two league outings and although they have failed to pick up any points, they have been desperately unlikely in defeat.
Continue reading for our full match preview and expert football betting tips, as we look at the upcoming clash between Tottenham and Newcastle.
Nine games will define how Tottenham’s season pans out, while this is the first of them and with the hosts being clear favourites to win on Sunday, backing them alone will hardly trouble the bookmakers.
However, I think I have found a bet that will and when you consider that Newcastle have an incredibly long injury list, goals, or the lack thereof, could well be an issue for manager Eddie Howe at the weekend.
Which is why I have plumped for Tottenham to win and more importantly, keep a clean sheet in North London and if you think that this will also be the case, you can back this outcome at odds of 143/100 (888sport).
Can Tottenham put the pressure on? That is the question that many are asking of the white half of North London and if they can, it will only make the race for a top-four place even more interesting.
Because after being edged out by Manchester United recently, Antonio Conte’s men replied in the best possible way, and this came courtesy of successive league wins over both Brighton and West Ham.
Something that they have largely failed to do since the turn of year, and it is continual stutters that have dampened the progress that Conte and his backroom staff soon made after his arrival.
However, the season is far from over and even though Tottenham have had a large number of indiscretions in 2022, they are still in with a shout of earning a return to the Champions League – something that would certainly justify Conte’s arrival as manager.
A shout that will become more of a roar if they can get the better of Newcastle on Sunday and if they are to supersede Arsenal in the race for fourth, a win would certainly crank the pressure up on the Gunners.
In terms of injuries and suspensions for the visit of Newcastle, Antonio Conte has a sizeable injury list to work with and with Ryan Sessegnon struggling to be fit for the weekend, he will join the pair of Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga on the treatment table.
Although Newcastle are breathing a lot easier these days, they are still not quite over the finishing line and when it comes to Premier League survival, it is fair to say that the Magpies still have some work to do.
Not as much work as when under the tutelage of previous manager Steve Bruce, but still a considerable amount of work all the same and with an incredibly difficult end of season stretch, the survival party cannot begin just yet.
Then again, this is something that manager Eddie Howe will be all too aware of and for someone who is so level headed, there will not be anything in the way of visible panic from the former Bournemouth boss.
While there was little in the way of panic after suffering two successive away defeats and with trips to Chelsea and Everton both ending up as pointless journeys, it would have been easy to show some frustration.
However, Howe is a rather measured man and with so much positive work being done since his arrival, Newcastle will hope that they can now huff and puff themselves over the Premier League survival line.
In terms of injuries and suspensions for the trip to Tottenham, it is an incredibly long list of injuries that manager Eddie Howe must deal with and with no fewer than five key names now absent, this will be a huge dent in the Magpies’ weekend preparations.
When it comes to the history of these two sides, it is Tottenham who have come out on top more often than not. However, one of the more memorable encounters between the pair, was 2019’s 1-1 draw in North London – one that saw Callum Wilson score a 90th minute penalty and earn the Magpies a point.
In terms of their overall head-to-head record, Tottenham have won on 72 occasions, Newcastle 59 and there have been 34 draws
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opened in 2019 and holds up to 62,062 supporters.
While not forgetting that it is one of the best stadiums in not only the Premier League but European football today and if the Spurs side can match the level of construction that has taken place in North London, it would be one of the greatest teams today.
When it comes to the Premier League odds for a top-four finish, Tottenham find themselves just placed behind Arsenal at the time of writing. Then again, a win on Sunday could see the market alter dramatically.
While when it comes to the market for Premier League relegation, Newcastle have drifted out to as long as 50/1 (LeoVegas) and it would take an incredible downturn in results to now see them suffer demotion to the Championship.
