Southampton vs Newcastle in the Premier League on Mar 10. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Southampton vs Newcastle in the Premier League on Mar 10. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

After being humbled by Aston Villa on Saturday, it means that Southampton’s impressive unbeaten run has come to an end and with a pack of teams now just two points behind them, the race for 9th place has seemingly intensified.

While this coming Thursday, they will prepare for the visit of Newcastle and with Eddie Howe’s men now unbeaten in their last eight Premier League matches, their transformation has been nothing short of incredible.

Newcastle Double Chance

With an eight-game unbeaten run powering them at present, there are plenty of reasons for Newcastle to be cheerful and now Eddie Howe and his players will look to extend that run to nine on Thursday.

Especially as Southampton’s own run of positive results has come to a screeching halt and although they will be looking to bounce back in midweek, such an achievement is easier said than done.

Which means after looking at the best sites online, I have a feeling that Newcastle will at least avoid defeat at St Mary’s and therefore, I am backing them in the double chance market at odds of 83/100 with bet365.

Southampton Form, squad news, opinion

Going into last Saturday’s meeting with Aston Villa, many would have tipped Southampton to not only get a point but also take all three in the process and after previously going five matches unbeaten, you could understand why.

Of course, that run came to an end at Villa Park and not only did it come to an end, but it also crumbled right before the eyes of manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, as the Saints lost by four goals to nil.

A result that has not changed anything in the grand scheme of things and although Southampton start this midweek schedule lying 9th in the table, a top-half finish now seems slightly less of a given.

Which is why Southampton will need to make sure that last Saturday’s reverse was nothing more than a blip and if they can return to winning ways against Newcastle, they will make perfect use of their game in hand.

Something that will have to do, if they are to keep the likes of Aston Villa and Leicester at bay and with these two also having spare games to call upon, they will have a keen interest on what happens at St Mary’s on Thursday.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the visit of Newcastle, there is nothing new to report for the Saints. Although that does also mean that the trio of Alex McCarthy, Nathan Tella and Lysanco are unavailable in midweek.

Newcastle Form, squad news, opinion

There is no doubt that Newcastle are making hay while the sun shines and with their unbeaten run now extending to eight Premier League outings, the outlook is a lot brighter on Tyneside.

While their current eight-game unbeaten run has been hugely important not just because of what is happening now but also because of what could come in the future and that could come in the form of league defeats.

Because after Thursday’s trip to Southampton, life begins to get incredibly difficult for the Magpies and had they not gone on such an impressive run since the turn of the year, their run in would be even more tricky than it looks to be.

With that said, you cannot put a price on momentum and that is exactly what they are generating under Eddie Howe. With the team playing with so much confidence in recent weeks, they could be in a position to bloody the noses of the biggest teams.

That though is still to come, and Newcastle’s focus will now be firmly placed on Southampton. With the Saints suffering such a comprehensive loss at the weekend, Eddie Howe’s men will be ready to heap more misery for their upcoming hosts.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the trip to Southampton, the injury list is beginning to shorten for manager Eddie Howe, and this means the trio of Kieran Trippier, Eddie Howe and Issac Hayden are still unavailable.

When it comes to the history of these two teams, they do not have much in the way of intense rivalry. However, both Southampton and Newcastle are regular members of the Premier League and a clash between the two is always an interesting one.

In terms of their overall head-to-head record, Southampton have won on 38 occasions, Newcastle 41 and there have been 24 draws

About the Venue

With St Mary’s being in operation for more than 20 years, it is one of the newer stadiums within the Premier League and it has previously played home to England national team matches as well.

With COVID-19 restrictions being lifted in England, it means there is no longer the need to show a Vaccine Passport before attending the ground. Which means, match tickets are the only item that is required to be produced at the time of writing.

When it comes to Premier League betting between now and the end of the season, there is not a great deal of reason to back Southampton and if the top 10 market is still available, backing the Saints may be worth your consideration.

While when it comes to Newcastle, they once looked an absolute cert to be relegated and for those who backed the Magpies to suffer demotion at the end of the season, that bet is not looking as shrewd as it once did.
