Southampton vs Chelsea in the Premier League on Apr 9. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Southampton vs Chelsea in the Premier League on Apr 9. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

It looks like Southampton’s season has now run out of steam. No win in their last four outings and just one point earned from the last 12 on offer, suggests that the Saints have packed up early.

Which could be good news for a Chelsea side that were woeful last weekend and after being well beaten by neighbours Brentford, they will look to return to winning ways on the South Coast.

Chelsea Over 1.5 Goals

With Chelsea having a point to prove, they are going to be my sole focus for this Saturday’s tip and therefore, I have had to dig deep across all the leading online betting sites. While thanks to my digging, I think I have come up with something rather good.

Because although Chelsea only found the net once last weekend, they will look to take their frustration out on Southampton and with that in mind, I think goals could be in regular supply on Saturday.

For me though, just two will do and if you also think that Chelsea will score more than one at St Mary’s, you can currently back this outcome at odds of 93/100(888sport) - something that would look rather nice on your weekend accumulator.

Southampton Form, squad news, opinion

No win in four, an FA Cup exit, a shortage of goals. That has been the tale of the Southampton tape in recent weeks and with a run of bad results under their belts, they also find themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

A position that they failed to pull themselves out of at the weekend and after only managing a draw away at Leeds, it means the Saints are no longer marching as they currently lie 12th in the table.

While with European football a long distant dream, the race for prize money begins and the higher Southampton finish at the end of the season, the greater rewards for the efforts across nine months.

Not only that, but it will also provide Southampton with the opportunity to reinforce their playing squad and if they can add some more quality, it may help in trying to keep James Ward-Prowse at the club.

Because although he is not actively for sale, there is no doubt that a number of clubs will be monitoring his situation across the summer and if the Saints do not finish in the top-ten, the England international may just be tempted to leave St Mary’s.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the visit of Chelsea, manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has been able to welcome back Lysanco but still must deal with the absences to both Nathan Tella and Alex McCarthy.

Chelsea Form, squad news, opinion

When Brentford netted the fourth in a 4-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday, you could hear the sound of betting coupons being busted up and down the country and even the most ardent fan of either club could not have envisaged that result.

However, that result is now firmly in the history books, and it is one that will have caused more than a ripple of concern in the Chelsea camp. Because if they continue to play like that between now and the end of the season, a Champions League invite may get lost in the post.

Chelsea were simply outclassed on Saturday, and this is perhaps a symptom of having nothing really to play for. The title race has long since surpassed them, a 3rd place looked a certainty before last Saturday.

Now though, manager Thomas Tuchel will have to hope that his men have been given something of a wakeup call after that Stamford Bridge disaster and one where his men show no sign of sluggishness this weekend.

Because if Chelsea do have a Brentford hangover, the teams below them will be licking their lips and if the current Champions League holders do not fancy a return to the competition, there are plenty of clubs that do.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the trip to Southampton, there is only one concern for manager Thomas Tuchel to deal with and that is the continued absence of England defender Ben Chilwell.

When it comes to the history of these two clubs, it is not the most intense in terms of rivalry, but it is a fixture that has been played a considerable number of times throughout the years. One that has seen Chelsea come out on top more often.

In terms of their overall head-to-head record, Southampton have won on 31 occasions, Chelsea 48 and there have been 31 draws

About the Venue

The St Mary’s Stadium opened in 2001 and holds up to 32,384 supporters.

After leaving the Dell behind at the start of the new millennium, it is the St Mary’s Stadium that now acts as home for Southampton and after hosting England internationals in the past, it can be considered a rather high-profile venue.

With that said, it has perhaps been overtaken by newer and shiner structures elsewhere and although it may only be 21 years in age, it is already beginning to lose some of the early character it once had.

When it comes to Southampton, there is little reason to bet on them at present and if you had to place your money somewhere, backing the Saints in the top-ten finish could still be a viable option.

While the same could be said for Chelsea and with them possessing a five-point gap over Tottenham and Arsenal at present, backing them for a top-four finish is still looking a near certainty, regardless of their massive wobble against Brentford last weekend.
