After shipping six unanswered goals to Chelsea last Saturday, it is fair to say that Southampton have packed up for the rest for the season and with nothing else to play for, their circumstance will play into the opposition’s hands.

Which is exactly what Arsenal will want to hear and after suffering a terrible week within the confines of the Premier League, they have now handed their previous 4th place over to arch rivals Tottenham.

Arsenal To Win And Under 2.5 Goals

With Southampton’s season all but reaching an early climax, this should play into the hands of Arsenal and with the Gunners searching for a first league win from three attempts, this is something of a must win for Mikel Arteta’s men.

Which is something that I have taken into consideration before searching all the biggest and best betting sites and although there are plenty of markets for me to place my bets, there is one in particular that I like the look of.

Although Arsenal are possessing their own issues in front of goal, they should have enough to beat Southampton and with an away win and under 2.5 total goals currently at odds of 7/2 (LeoVegas) , this is where my focus will be going before the weekend.

Southampton Form, squad news, opinion

One point from the last 15 on offer, that is the tale of the Southampton tape right now and after such a bad run of results have been recorded, their Premier League record is not as pretty as it once was.

Because all the talk of a top-ten finish has now dissipated and with the Saints starting this weekend lying as low as 14th, there are once again questions regarding motivation within the Southampton camp.

In fairness though, you must remember that the Saints have downed tools only because they can and with the remit of Premier League survival already ticked off for this season, there is a sense that the job is done.

However, it is also something that suggests a lack of motivation from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men and if they are to try and progress as a club, then a strong end to the campaign would be welcomed.

Especially as the higher Southampton can finish up the table, the more prize money will come their way and if they harbour desires to progress further, then an influx of funds will certainly be necessary.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the visit of Arsenal, there are only two issues for manager Ralph Hasenhuttl to deal with and that is the continual absences of both Alex McCarthy and Nathan Tella.

Arsenal Form, squad news, opinion

A short trip to Crystal Palace, the visit of Brighton. Two fixtures that even the most pessimistic Arsenal fan would have deemed winnable in the past week. Then again, the two results have created nothing but pessimism within the Arsenal camp.

Because what was once Arsenal lying 4th in the Premier League table, is now Arsenal lying 5th and even though they still have a game in hand over their biggest rivals Tottenham, they now find themselves lying three points behind.

Not only that, but due to their two defeats being combined with the nine goals that Tottenham have scored during the same period, there has also been a huge swing when it comes to goal difference.

A swing which is almost as good as an extra point in the Premier League, and this means that Arsenal will have even more work to do, in their pursuit of Tottenham and a return to the Champions League.

Work that must start this Saturday and if the Gunners can get the better of the Saints at St Mary’s, it will at least allow them to start putting the past week behind them. Then again, one wonders if the damage is already done?

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the trip to Southampton, there is one long-term absence for manager Mikel Arteta and this is the news that Kieran Tierney will be out for the rest of the season.

While Thomas Partey and Takehiro Tomiyasu, both will face a fitness test before Saturday’s trip to St Mary’s.

History

When it comes to the history of these two sides, it is Arsenal who have come out on top more often and their most memorable clash was the 2003 FA Cup final at the Millennium Stadium - one where the Gunners lifted the trophy.

In terms of their overall head-to-head record, Southampton have won on 22 occasions, Arsenal 53 and there have been 28 draws.

About the Venue

St Mary’s Stadium opened in 2001 and holds up to 32,384 supporters.

After leaving their historic home behind at the turn of the new millennium, The Dell is no longer the ground that plays host to Southampton and instead, it is St Mary’s Stadium that now welcomes the Saints.

Although the ground looked rather impressive at the time of construction, it has been overtaken by newer builds since and it is perhaps symptomatic of the identikit designs of the early century.

Conclusion

In terms of backing Southampton in any Premier League outright market, there is little of interest for punters at present and your better focus is placed on who they face in the remaining few weeks of the season.

While in terms of Arsenal, they will look to get their Champions League charge back on track and if they can come out on top on Saturday, it will at least stop their top-four finish odds from lengthening further.
