Real Madrid will look to take one big step towards the La Liga title this weekend as they face a difficult trip to Sevilla.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side have a 12-point lead over their nearest rivals with seven games remaining, and they’ll want to avoid any late drama or tension by securing their 35th league crown in the coming weeks.
With 22 wins in their 31 games thus far, Los Blancos have shown that they certainly have the quality to finish the job, but it won’t be easy away at Sevilla, who will hope to close the gap and keep themselves in contention.
The visitors go into this showdown as 5/4 (888sport) favourites, while the hosts are available at 11/5 (Betfair) as they will undoubtedly have to produce something close to their best performance of the season to produce a shock.
Neither side will want to lose this game and so it could set up a more cautious and cagey encounter where they look to keep things tight at the back as a priority.
Particularly for Real Madrid, while they’ll of course be hoping to return home with all three points, they will want to prevent Sevilla from building any late momentum in the title race, while also edging ahead of Barcelona.
As the head-to-head record suggests between these two sides in recent times, there is often little to split them, and that could be the case again here as the quality in the two sides will make this an evenly fought clash.
After a run of three draws and a defeat, Sevilla finally got back to winning ways last time out with a 4-2 victory over Granada at home.
Prior to that, they lost a crunch clash with Barcelona at the Nou Camp, while their Europa League campaign came to an end too.
In turn, they’ve had a difficult run which would have left them disappointed, and it remains to be seen if they can put together a string of wins to end the season in strong fashion and remain in contention.
Rafa Mir will be their top threat as he tops the goalscoring charts for them with nine goals in La Liga so far this season, while he was also on the mark against Granada.
However, they’ve managed 44 goals in 31 games as a team to date, giving them the second lowest tally of the top seven sides in the standings.
Their damaging 4-0 home defeat to Barcelona last month aside, Ancelotti’s men have been in top form both at home and in Europe.
They’ve won six of their last seven La Liga games, scoring 15 goals and conceding six, and they’ll hope they can finish the job off in the coming weeks and seal the league title.
Karim Benzema has been sensational this year with 24 goals and 11 assists in 27 league appearances, while Vinicius Jr has shone too with 14 goals and seven assists in 29 outings as the pair have been pivotal in the final third to give Real Madrid the most potent attack in the league with 63 goals in total in 31 games.
In their last seven meetings, Real Madrid have won five, with one draw and one win for Sevilla.
On their last two trips to face the Andalusian outfit, they’ve come away with narrow 1-0 wins, and so that could be an indication of what’s to come this weekend as more recent general form and stats for both sides back a similar result.
The Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium has a capacity of just under 43,000, and it’s known for creating a superb atmosphere when the home crowd is in full voice.
That will certainly be the case this weekend as they’ll back their players by trying to unsettle the visitors and putting pressure on them from the stands, but such is the quality and experience of the Real Madrid squad, they’ll have seen it all before.
Nevertheless, they still have a job to do and it isn’t going to be easy, with the opening stages of the game likely to be crucial in determining just how vocal the home faithful will be.
This is going to be a real battle between these two sides, and they’ll throw everything at this game to try and come out on top, both in the clash itself and the bigger picture of the title race.
Real Madrid have been here before so many times though, and coupled with their record against Sevilla over the last few years as well as the form that they’re in currently, they’ll be confident of coming away with all three points.
