RB Salzburg vs Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Feb 16. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

RB Salzburg vs Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Feb 16. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

It’s about as local a derby as you can get at this stage in the Champions League as tournament second-favourites Bayern Munich make the relatively short trip to Austria to face RB Salzburg.

Bayern hardly prepared for this one in ideal fashion as they suffered a crushing 4-2 defeat to Bochum at the weekend, but they did rest a number of key players and could afford a bad result, given their healthy lead at the top of the German Bundesliga.

It’s a similar story as far as Salzburg’s domestic outlook goes, with the Red Bulls comfortably clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga.

Let’s take a look at this one in more detail before delivering our expert football betting tips.

Bayern Munich Win and Over 3.5 Goals

It’s always helpful if you can pick up some clues when attempting to dig out some value in Champions League games like this one and there’s no better place to start than when these two met in the group stages of last season’s Champions League.

Bayern won both, with a 3-1 victory at the end of November 2020 coming a few weeks after they went to Austria and delivered a 6-2 hammering at the Red Bull Arena.

And the Bavarians do tend to offer plenty in the goals department when they win games. Seven of their last eight wins have seen them score at least three times, but with only clean sheet in their last five, could the door be open for Salzburg?

We certainly think so, and the fact that Munich failed to keep clean sheets in both games against Salzburg last season only adds further fuel to our expectation that this could be a high-scoring contest.

With all that considered, we think a Bayern Munich Win and Over 3.5 Goals is the way to go on Wednesday night. It’s a bet you can pick up at 6/4 with Sportnation.

Bayern Munich Form, squad news, opinion

It hasn’t been a superlative season for Bayern, but on the domestic front they’re getting the job done without a great deal of fuss. At the time of writing, Julian Nagelsmann’s men sit nine points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with 12 games to play. It’s safe to say the league title is in the bag.

But they were superb in what was a potentially tricky Champions League group that featured Barcelona, as well as experienced European operators Benfica and Dynamo Kiev. Bayern made mincemeat of the group, winning all six games and scoring 22 goals in the process.

They really should be too strong here, but they do have to be mindful of their iffy defensive record in recent weeks. Two clean sheets in their last nine away games might have Bayern fans a tad apprehensive ahead of this one.

But with the attacking options at their disposal, this should be a comfortable win over two legs.

The most notable injury absentee for this one is goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who has recently undergone knee surgery, while Leon Goretzka (hip) and Alphonso Davies (heart) remain out.

RB Salzburg Form, squad news, opinion

With only one defeat in their opening 19 Austrian Bundesliga games, RB Salzburg are cruising towards a ninth consecutive league title, sitting 14 points clear at the top.

They’re clearly a cut above the rest at home, while in Europe they did superbly to come through a tough Champions League group that featured Lille, Wolfsburg and Sevilla. A 1-0 victory over the latter confirmed their place in the knockout rounds and that shows they have the mettle against top continental sides.

But Bayern are a completely different kettle of fish, and despite a Salzburg run of just one competitive defeat at home in over a year, we expect the Germans to be that little bit too strong.

But RB will be hoping to bank on an excellent home record in Europe that saw them win all three of their group games at the Red Bull Arena.

Salzburg have plenty of injuries, but perhaps the most significant is that of rising star Sekou Keita, who remains out with a long-term knee injury.

There’s very little history between the two, with their two group games in last season’s Champions League being the only meetings to have taken place.

About the Venue

The Red Bull Arena is on the cusp of its 19th birthday, having opened in March of 2003.

And home fans aren’t too accustomed to seeing their side lose, with Salzburg’s last home defeat coming in February 2021.

Salzburg know how to punch above their weight in Europe, so we do expect them to make a decent fist of the home leg of this tie at least.

Bayern certainly aren’t at full strength, but their depth is amongst the best in Europe, and whatever side they put out should have too much for a home side that also have injuries of their own to deal with.
