RB Leipzig vs Atalanta in the Europa League on April 7, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

RB Leipzig vs Atalanta in the Europa League on April 7, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

While both sides continue to battle for a top-four finish in their respective leagues, they meet in the Europa League this week in search of moving closer to silverware.

Leipzig sit in fourth place in the Bundesliga having gone five unbeaten now and off the back of a comprehensive 4-1 win over Dortmund at the weekend.

In contrast, Atalanta are at real risk of dropping out of the Champions League next season, as the gap continues to widen between themselves and fourth spot.

For now though, their focus switches to European competition, with Leipzig the favourites to win the first leg at 10/11 (bet365), while Atalanta are 5/2 outsiders (888sport) to pick up a win on the road.

Atalanta to win

Since dropping down to the Europa League, Atalanta have won all four of their Europa League games.

In that run, they defeated Olympiacos 3-0 away from home, and also got the better of Bayer Leverkusen in a 1-0 win last time out.

The Serie A side are well set up to hurt teams on the counter-attack when they’re away from home, and having also gained the experience and boost of beating German opposition in the last round, they’ll go into this tie full of confidence.

With the pace and threat on the break that they possess, this is going to be a really tricky balancing act for Leipzig to get a positive result.

With that in mind, we can’t ignore the odds of 5/2 (bet365) – as well available with all of the reliable sports betting sites – for Atalanta to win.

RB Leipzig Form, squad news, opinion

Since dropping down into this competition, Leipzig have only played two European games this calendar year as they saw off Real Sociedad in February.

After their tie with Spartak Moscow was cancelled last month, they will need to adjust to the pace and tempo of the game against Atalanta quickly, and that could be easier said than done.

Emil Forsberg will be a key player for them, while Christopher Nkunku is their main threat having bagged 16 goals and 11 assists in the Bundesliga so far this season.

Andre Silva has 10 goals and two assists in 28 league outings, and so they certainly have firepower of their own to score goals, but it remains to be seen if they can keep a potent Atalanta side quiet too.

Atalanta form, squad news, opinion

As noted above, Atalanta have been excellent in the Europa League thus far, although they haven’t quite matched that in Serie A.

Nevertheless, they’ll be confident in their ability to continue to impress in Europe with the way they set up tactically, and they have a lot of quality of their own to boast too.

Mario Pasalic has nine goals and six assists domestically, while Duvan Zapata has nine goals and four assists to his name.

In the Europa League, it’s Ruslan Malinovskyi who tops the goalscoring charts for them with three, and so they have goals and quality right across the XI.

Atalanta are arguably even better suited playing away from home as they can maximise the technical quality, pace and power they have in the side to hurt teams. Back them to do it again in Leipzig.

With the two sides having never met competitively before, it’s the start of a new chapter in their history as they look to get the better of each other.

Having been able to have a close look at how they set up against Leverkusen, Leipzig will take notes from that tie to avoid a similar fate to their Bundesliga rivals, while Atalanta will know, to an extent, what to expect in this one as well.

It sets up a fascinating clash between two sides who should put on a real spectacle given the goals in both teams.

About the Venue

The Red Bull Arena has a capacity of just under 42,000, and as with most stadiums across Germany, it has a modernised feel and a great atmosphere.

Leipzig were held to a draw by Sociedad in their only Europa League home game thus far, and so they’ll be hoping to fare better on this occasion and shore things up at the back having conceded two in that game.

Nevertheless, it’s going to be a difficult task for Atalanta despite having overcome Leverkusen in the last round, and they’ll have to be at their best to silence the home crowd.

Atalanta have been impressive in the Europa League and have the attacking weapons to hurt Leipzig if they aren’t at their best defensively.

While the home side are strong and have a lot of quality of their own, as evidenced in their win at Dortmund on Saturday, it’s a dangerous first leg for them at home with Atalanta playing with a bit more freedom to try and take something back to Bergamo.

In turn, the Serie A side could cause them real problems and while it wouldn’t come as a surprise if they get on the scoresheet, they have a real chance of coming away with a win too.
