Rangers vs Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on April 3, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

Rangers vs Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on April 3, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

Two old foes collide in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday as Rangers host rivals Celtic at Ibrox in a top-of-the-table clash.

As expected, the perennial title challengers sit in the top two places in the standings ahead of the encounter, 20 points above nearest rivals Hearts in third spot.

However, with more wins than Rangers, who have drawn seven games so far this season, it’s Celtic who are setting the pace at the top with 76 points from their 31 league games thus far, putting them three points ahead of their upcoming opponents.

With the first phase of the Scottish Premiership ending, the two Scottish giants will be desperate to get the better of the other as they hope to lift the title this year.

Rangers to win 1-0

As ever with this fixture, emotions and tension will be running high and that generally results in a great spectacle that these two sides put on.

Home advantage has proven to be particularly important in this fixture in more recent meetings, and it could be crucial for Rangers who are looking to wipe out that three-point deficit they currently face.

There really is very little to split these two teams, but with a raucous home crowd backing them and with the hunger to know that any other result beyond a win could be costly, it’s Rangers who could come out on top in this one in a close battle.

With that in mind, we can’t ignore the odds of 7/1 (SportNation) – as well available with all of the reliable sports betting sites – for a 1-0 Rangers win.

Rangers Form, squad news, opinion

Prior to the international break, Rangers were rounding into good form after winning three consecutive games, having drawn the two previous.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will have been desperate to keep that momentum going, and he’ll hope that the break hasn’t disrupted his side as they look to pick up another crucial win in the business end of the season.

Ianis Hagi is expected to be the home side’s only notable absentee with no fresh injury concerns for Rangers, and although they’ve had their sticky patches this season, they have a squad and a starting XI more than capable of getting all three points this weekend.

Celtic form, squad news, opinion

Similarly to their next opponents, Celtic are also on a three-game winning streak as they produced a fine response after dropping points previous to that.

They’ve been utterly dominant in those outings, scoring nine while conceding just one goal, while they had a 3-0 Scottish Cup win sandwiched in between as well.

There is concern that Tom Rogic could miss out on this game after he was forced to withdraw from international duty with Australia due to an ankle injury, and that would be a blow for Celtic if he’s absent.

That said, they certainly have enough quality across the pitch to be more than competitive in this game regardless, and with a lead to protect in the standings, Rangers will have to be at their very best in all departments to get the better of them.

Perhaps the more important aspect of the head-to-head record is how these two sides have fared in more recent meetings.

In their last six clashes, Rangers have got the better of Celtic on four occasions, with one draw and one defeat.

Celtic were winners the last time these two met in February though with a comprehensive 3-0 victory, but it’s interesting to note that the home side has won this fixture in four straight games, and five of the last six.

In turn, that would be another argument in favour of backing Rangers for this one, and historically, there usually isn’t much to split them with an odd goal or two in it.

About the Venue

Ibrox has a maximum capacity of just over 50,000, and, especially for any meeting with Celtic, the home faithful produce a deafening atmosphere such is the ferocity and passion of this derby.

Rangers have an excellent record at home this season with 12 wins and four draws, and importantly, they have yet to lose at Ibrox. In those games, they’ve scored 33 goals and conceded just nine.

As a result, it’s going to take something special from Celtic to breach fortress Ibrox, with Ange Postecoglou’s side winning 11 times on the road this season along with two draws, but importantly they’ve also suffered three defeats and so that’s where their weakness has been.

That home record for Rangers this season is hard to ignore. With the backing of their fans at Ibrox, they will make it incredibly hostile for Celtic, who arguably have enough players in the squad that have the experience to deal with it well enough.

Nevertheless, there is usually not a lot in these games and with the home side itching to claw back that three-point deficit and move level at the top.

There have been a couple of games where one side has completely dominated, but those are few and far between and so Rangers could be the smart option to just nick this one.
