After last weekend’s results, the Serie A title rise is really hotting up. AC Milan’s victory over Inter means there’s now just one point separating the top three. Simone Inzaghi’s men still lead the way - and they do have a game in hand - as they take on second-placed Napoli on Saturday evening.
The home side have started to find their form again after a rough spell at the end of last year. Three points in this one will see them climb back into top spot, so this definitely feels like a significant game in what is set to be a thrilling fight for the Scudetto.
Inter’s loss against their bitter city rivals was their first defeat since mid-October, but they haven’t lost back-to-back league games since March 2020. The Diego Armando Maradona Stadium isn’t an easy place to visit, but Napoli haven’t been at their best there of late, so Inter will feel confident of coming away with something.
There’s quite a few things pointing towards this being a pretty even contest. They’re the top two teams in the division with a point between them, so that’s hardly surprising, but with no side jumping out for win purposes, we could see the points shared.
Napoli have won four straight in Serie A, and they should have enough to combat what has been a pretty devastating Inter team this campaign.
The visitors have kept just one clean sheet in their last six matches (prior to their midweek cup game against Roma). However, they’ve scored ten goals in their last four away trips in the league, so both teams getting on the scoresheet looks a strong possibility.
With these things in mind, our selection is Draw And Both Teams To Score at odds of 10/3 with Unibet.
Napoli look firmly out of the slump they found themselves in at the end of 2021. They’re unbeaten in Serie A in this calendar year, with their only blip coming in a 5-2 Coppa Italia extra time loss against Fiorentina.
A big positive for them is the return of current top scorer this season, Victor Osimhen. The Nigeria striker made his first start since November in Gli Azzurri’s 2-0 win over Venezia last weekend, where he also opened the scoring.
Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti will be happy with where his side are at currently - firmly back in the title picture, and almost at full strength. Both Kalidou Koulibaly and Andre Zambo Anguissa can now return with the Africa Cup of Nations finished, but Hirving Lozano could be out until April with a shoulder injury.
Losing isn’t something you often associate with this Inter side, so they’ll be more than motivated for this one. They’re still 4/9 favourites to land what would be back-to-back Scudettos.
Two goals in three second half minutes from Oliver Giroud turned the Milan derby on its head after Ivan Perisic opened the scoring with a well-placed volley - the Croatian’s 50th goal for the club.
It was only the Nerazzurri’s second league defeat of the season, and given Inter still played well in parts, it won’t be something manager Inzaghi has to ponder on for too long.
Joaquin Correa remains out for the visitors with a hamstring injury.
Three of the last four meetings between the sides have resulted in Inter Milan wins. All of them were at the San Siro, with the last two clashes at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium ending in stalemates.
It was a 3-2 win for the Nerazzurri when they met earlier in this campaign. That ended Napoli’s unbeaten start to the term. The match had a ferocious tempo to it, so if we get something similar here, it should be an entertaining affair.
The pair have locked horns a total of 49 times in the past. Inter shade the head-to-head record with 21 wins, compared to Napoli’s 16.
The Diego Armando Maradona Stadium is the third largest ground in Italy. It officially opened back in 1959, and recently had a name change following the death of former Napoli icon, the great Diego Maradona. It was formerly known as Stadio San Paolo.
Gli Azzurri have tremendously loyal supporters. Even when they were in Serie C in the 2005/06 season, they averaged the third highest home attendance across the whole of Italy for that campaign.
A huge match in the Serie A title race picture. With things concertinaing at the top, the battle for the Scudetto is looking wide open again.
Inter will be eager to bounce back after a disappointing defeat against rivals AC Milan, but Napoli have home advantage and a bit of momentum behind them, so we should see a very competitive game.
