Middlesbrough vs Fulham in the Championship on April 6, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

Middlesbrough vs Fulham in the Championship on April 6, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

As the battle for promotion continues in the Championship this week, Middlesbrough host Fulham hoping to upset the league leaders and secure a crucial result in their bid to secure a playoff spot.

Both sides returned after the international break with a win, as Middlesbrough put four past Peterborough Utd on the road, while Fulham emerged as winners in their derby with QPR at Loftus Road.

For Fulham, it was another important three points as they remain eight points clear at the top of the Championship, while Middlesbrough moved back into the playoff spots and sit in fifth place.

With so much at stake now heading into the final few weeks of the season, the hosts can’t afford any slip-ups here. While for the Cottagers, they look to be Premier League bound next year given they boast a 14-point lead over third place currently, but they’ll want to wrap things up and secure the league title as soon as possible too.

Back a draw between Middlesbrough-Fulham

Fulham have unsurprisingly been rampant on the road given their league standing, winning 12 of 19 games away from home and scoring 47 goals while conceding just 16.

However, Middlesbrough have the fourth best home record in the Championship and as they know they can’t afford to drop points here and lose ground in the playoff race, they’ll put everything into this game to keep Fulham as quiet as possible.

It won’t be easy, but as history tells us in this fixture at the Riverside, Fulham haven’t found it as straight-forward to get wins as it has been for them in the Championship this season. In turn, they could struggle to break down a stubborn home side.

With that in mind, we’re backing odds of 12/5 (888sport) – as well available with all of the reliable sports betting websites – for a draw between Middlesbrough and Fulham.

Middlesbrough Form, squad news, opinion

Middlesbrough come into this game on a three-game unbeaten run, winning two and picking up a draw, as they try to build some late momentum in their promotion push.

In that run, they’ve kept three consecutive clean sheets and scored six goals, but it’s perhaps important to note that all those games have come away from home.

That said, they’ve been strong at home this season too overall, winning 12 of 18 games at the Riverside Stadium, with two draws and four defeats. In those games, they’ve scored 29 and conceded 16.

With no single player in double digits for goals so far this season, they will continue to spread them around and look for inspiration across the side, while creator-in-chief Isaiah Jones will hope to play a key role.

There’s a lot of talent in this Middlesbrough squad, hence why they’re fighting for promotion to the Premier League, and at home, they’ll fancy their chances.

Fulham form, squad news, opinion

After their surprise defeat at West Brom prior to the international break, league-leaders Fulham bounced back with a key win over QPR at the weekend.

That’s now three wins in their last five outings, and that’s helping them to remain top of the pile heading into the final fixtures of the season as they hope to be crowned Championship winners again this year.

It comes as no surprise that it was Aleksandar Mitrovic who scored both their goals at QPR, as he took his tally to 37 for the season along with seven assists, and with the likes of Harry Wilson, Neeskens Kebano and Fabio Carvalho tormenting Championship defences too, they have a very potent side.

Having scored a staggering 92 goals in 38 league games so far this season, it’s going to take something special to keep them quiet.

In 32 previous meetings, Middlesbrough have won 11 of those, with seven coming at home.

Fulham have won 13 but with just two coming at the Riverside, with the two sides playing out six draws there in those previous encounters.

In turn, history tells us that it’s not a traditionally happy hunting ground for Fulham, but with the quality that they have in their side this year, they’ll be confident of getting a result this time round regardless.

About the Venue

The Riverside Stadium has a capacity just short of 35,000, and with a big midweek game such as this one against the runaway leaders Fulham, it’s expected that there will be a decent turn-out to cheer on Chris Wilder and his players.

As noted above, Middlesbrough have been strong at home this season, winning 12, losing just four and picking up two draws in 18 games, and so Fulham will need to be at their best if they want to return to west London with all three points in the bag.

Fulham’s dominance this season coupled with how potent their attack is makes this a really difficult game for Middlesbrough.

While they’ve been excellent defensively in recent games, this is going to be a completely different test and they’ll certainly be up for it given what’s at stake for them in the playoff battle.

Under the lights at the Riverside and with a noisy crowd behind them, back the hosts to contain Fulham by showing plenty of grit and determination to get a point out of this one.
