Manchester United vs Southampton in the Premier League on Feb 12. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Manchester United vs Southampton in the Premier League on Feb 12. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

There is no doubt that Manchester United have had something of a week to forget and after suffering a shock exit to Middlesbrough in the Fourth Round of the F.A. Cup, they fared little better against Burnley on Tuesday.

Which means Ralf Rangnick’s men will aim to return to winning ways at the weekend, as they play host to Southampton and with the Saints always capable of pulling off an upset, the Red Devils will have to be firing on all cylinders at Old Trafford.

Over 2.5 Goals

With United offering up an abundance of attacking options, they will always create chances - something that was clear against Middlesbrough last Friday, as they created no less than 30 efforts.

However, it is finishing those opportunities which may end up being the problem and this is where United must learn the lessons of the two recent failures. Something that I feel will lead to goals this weekend.

With Southampton being known to draw league matches with often regularity, they may be good value for a point, but I think the safer bet at Old Trafford, will be backing a total of over 2.5 goals at odds of 39/50 with bet365.

Manchester United Form, squad news, opinion

After Tuesday’s Premier League results went against them, Manchester United have once again slipped out of fourth spot in the table and with more of their rivals still to play in midweek, the damage is only likely to get worse.

Because after being dumped out of cup action last Friday night, a win over Burnley was not just needed but demanded and after only managing to get a draw at Turf Moor, their Champions League credentials have once again been called into question.

Questions that are starting to be placed in the direction of interim manager Ralf Rangnick and although he recently stated that United have improved since his installation, Tuesday’s performance against Burnley made a mockery of such a statement.

Of course, you could argue that Burnley are currently fighting for their lives and Turf Moor is never a nice place to go to. Then again, this is a star-studded United side, and they should have had more than enough to earn maximum points.

While it is maximum points which will be on the agenda this Saturday and if the Red Devils can silence the Saints at home, they can at least put the last seven days or so firmly behind them.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the visit of Southampton, Eric Bailly is a doubt due to an ankle injury and there could be more defensive woe for interim manager Ralf Rangnick, as Victor Lindelof has recently been out through illness.

Southampton Form, squad news, opinion

When it comes to Southampton’s season, they must be considered one of the draw specialists of the division and with 10 stalemates recorded from their first 22 matches, it signifies one of two things.

First, it is fair to say that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are a rather tough nut to crack and secondly, they perhaps lack the real cutting edge that is needed to put opposition teams to bed.

However, this is a Southampton side that is also starting to generate a decent amount of momentum and after stopping Manchester City’s incredible run of successive Premier League wins, they have also managed to advance in the F.A. Cup.

Which means Southampton will come to Old Trafford on Saturday in a relatively good mood and although they suffered a 9-0 defeat at this ground just over a year ago, it is unlikely that such a thrashing will be handed out this time.

Because this time, Southampton will latch on to the fact that Manchester United have stuttered during this past week and they will be ready to cause a nightmare at the Theatre of Dreams.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the trip to Manchester United, there are no new injuries for Southampton to be concerned about. However, the pair of Alex McCarthy and Will Smallbone are unlikely to make the trip to Old Trafford.

History

When it comes to the pairing of Manchester United and Southampton, it is one of the more established fixtures within the confines of English football and with the Red Devils usually coming out on top, they will hope for more of the same this weekend.

In terms of their overall head-to-head record, Manchester United have won on 67 occasions, Southampton 28 and there have been 35 draws

About the Venue

As far as Old Trafford goes, it is not known as the Theatre of Dreams for nothing and with it boasting the biggest capacity of all the league stadiums in England, the roar of its supporters is simply unmatchable.

With COVID-19 restrictions being lifted in England, it means there is no longer the need to show a Vaccine Passport before attending the ground. Which means, match tickets are the only item that is required to be produced at the time of writing.

Conclusion

On paper Manchester United should have more than enough to get the better of Southampton. However, as we all know by now, football matches are not played on such a material.

Which means United are going to have to find a performance which has been lacking as of late and after getting the benefit of a new manager bounce, now it is time for Ralf Rangnick to really show his worth.
