Manchester United vs Chelsea in the Premier League on Apr 28. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Manchester United vs Chelsea in the Premier League on Apr 28. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

With three defeats from their last four Premier League outings, it is fair to say that Manchester United’s season has hit the skids and with a return to the Champions League looking unlikely, they must now salvage what is left of the campaign.

However, such a thing is easier said than done and with Chelsea knowing they can take a huge step towards securing that same European invite on Thursday, they will not be looking to take their foot off the gas just yet.

Chelsea 2-1 Win

The one thing that Manchester United cannot afford on Thursday is another Premier League defeat. Unfortunately for them though, this is something that I can envisage happening at Old Trafford.

With that in mind, backing the Chelsea win on its own is something that I have considered before looking at the biggest and best online betting sites. However, I think I can add a bit more meat to the bones at the same time.

Manchester United Form, squad news, opinion

There is no doubt that last week was a week to forget for Manchester United and after suffering defeats to both Liverpool and Arsenal, the Red Devils find themselves well outside the race for a top-four finish.

Not only that but in a week where Erik ten Hag has been appointed as the next United boss, the Dutchman will see those two defeats and know that an incredible amount of work needs to be done in the summer and beyond.

Then again, it is fair to say that work still needs to be done under Ralf Ragnick and with the German’s tactical strategies being ones that have been torn apart in the last few days, the Old Trafford outfit are looking rather like a rudderless ship.

Something that was perhaps to be expected once Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was given his marching orders and once Rangnick was installed as the interim replacement, any real direction for the season had been lost.

While it is an end to the season that cannot come soon enough and with Harry Maguire being left on the bench for the defeat at Arsenal, there will be a lot of focus on whether the England international is selected on Thursday.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the visit of Chelsea, the injury list is getting no shorter for interim manager Ralf Rangnick and this means that the quartet of Fred, Edinson Cavani, Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba will all be on the sidelines this Thursday.

Chelsea Form, squad news, opinion

Although Chelsea left it late to get the better of West Ham, they did eventually earn all three points on Sunday and in doing so, they have further solidified their prospects of Champions League football next season.

Admittedly that is all Chelsea have had to play for within the confines of the Premier League and with a 3rd place finish being a near certainty for a number of months, it leaves the club with a dilemma over the summer.

One where they will have to work out how to bridge the gap between themselves and the two outfits above and when you consider that new ownership must also be installed, the fear is that they go backwards instead of forwards.

Especially when you consider that Chelsea are now set to lose Antonio Rudiger at the end of this campaign and with the German refusing to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge, he will be a difficult player to replace.

Of course, Chelsea have always been known for big spending and this season is no different. However, since the sanctions that were applied to previous owner Roman Abramovich, one wonders if the days of largesse will soon come to a shuddering halt.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the trip to Manchester United, there is also a long list for Thomas Tuchel to work with and with Ben Chilwell already a long-term absentee, he will now be joined by Antonio Rudiger, Mateo Kovacic and Reece James on the sidelines.

History

When it comes to the history of Manchester United and Chelsea, it is the Red Devils who have come out on top more often than not. While the peak of the rivalry between these two clubs was back in 2008 as they met in that year’s Champions League final - a clash that United would eventually win after a penalty shootout.

pointer right
In terms of their overall head-to-head record, Manchester United have won on 81 occasions, Chelsea 55 and there have been 54 draws.

About the Venue

Old Trafford opened in 1910 and holds up to 74,879 supporters

When it comes to constructions within the confines of the Premier League, they do not get any bigger than Old Trafford and with plans to expand the Theatre of Dreams even further, the capacity could soon swell beyond 80,000.

With that said, the capacity may be wasted on competitions such as the Europa League or Europa Conference League and with the way they are playing right now, Thursday night European football may soon be on the agenda.

Conclusion

When it comes to Manchester United and the outright odds for a top-four Premier League finish, it looks like that ship has now sailed and now punters must focus on a top-six finish at absolute best.

quotes
While as far as Chelsea are concerned, there is little value in backing them in the same top-four finish market and therefore, your money is better held back before this season’s FA Cup final instead.
