Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Mar 15. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Mar 15. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Ralf Rangnick will probably be pretty content with the 1-1 draw his Manchester United side managed to take away from the first leg of this tie in Spain. That said, at home and in front of an increasingly more-frustrated Old Trafford faithful, the job of progressing here certainly isn’t an easy one.

They were pretty fortunate to come away from the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium with the aggregate score level too. United had a good chunk of the ball that night but their performance lacked any intensity, and Atletico looked in control for the majority of the 90 minutes.

A brilliant Renan Lodi cross was latched on to by a spring-heeled Joao Felix to give Atletico a deserved lead early on. It was 19-year-old substitute Anthiny Elanga who came to the Red Devils’ rescue late on, confidently slotting home after a Bruno Fernandes through ball.

Atleti boss Diego Simeone will have been ruing his sides missed chances, but a repeat performance with more conviction might be enough to see them through here. The latest Champions League betting odds have United as 11/20 (bet365) favourites to advance, though.

Atletico Madrid To Win

Given how the first leg went, and what United have shown since, backing them to win the game at 11/10(SportNation) certainly doesn’t look an appealing bet.

For their usual high standards, Atletico have faltered a bit this season, but they still have their solid foundations, and Simone is certainly a manager who will make sure his side take advantage of the fragility of their opponents here.

The La Liga club will feel unlucky not to be carrying a lead into Old Trafford, but the hosts are struggling to make much click with any consistency at the minute. That can be said for both going forward and at the back, and Atletico showed in the first leg that they’re much more organised in many departments compared to this disjointed United team. So, with that in mind, we like the selection of Atletico Madrid To Win at odds of 14/5 (Betfred).

Manchester United Form, squad news, opinion

The Champions League is Manchester United’s only realistic hope of ending their silverware drought this season, but even the most optimistic of Red Devils fans probably don’t see them winning Europe’s elite club competition this term.

Prior to their Premier League game against Tottenham, Rangnick’s side have won just two of their last eight games across all competitions, so they don’t come into this game with much momentum.

Their 4-1 derby defeat to Manchester City further enhanced the distance they have to go to compete with the elite clubs in world football right now.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed that game, and at the time of writing, Rangnick is unsure when he’ll be fit enough to play again.

Atletico Madrid Form, squad news, opinion

When looking back on the first leg, Atletico almost did everything right performance-wise, but they couldn’t quite convert that into a win - a lapse at the back gave United a lifeline on the night.

Simeone’s Atletico side has been famed for many years for how good they are defensively, but this season has seen a downfall in that area. They’ve tightened things up a bit in recent games, though, and before facing Cadiz at the weekend, they’ve won three of their last four matches.

Los Colchoneros’ last two Champions League away games in England ended in 2-0 defeats against Liverpool and Chelsea respectively. United aren’t quite on that level, though, and it might come down to whether or not Atletico can finish off their chances – something they struggled to do in the first leg. They’ll be hoping for another fast start, and an early lead is likely to see them try and soak up waves of pressure until the final whistle.

This is just the fourth ever meeting between the sides. Prior to the 1-1 draw in the first leg of this Champions League Round of 16 tie, the only other times the clubs had met was back in the 1991 European Cup Winners Cup, with Atletico winning 3-0 at home before a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

About the Venue

One of the most famous stadiums in the world and dubbed the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, Old Trafford was built in 1909 and can hold a maximum of 74,140 people.

It has a littered history that includes plenty of renovations, and even significant damage from bombings in World War II. Additionally, it’s been a key component of Manchester United’s success over the years, but in the last few seasons, it hasn’t quite been the fortress it was once.

Confidence will be low in the Manchester United camp and this game looks pivotal when it comes to maintaining any excitement around their campaign.

Atletico were the stronger of the two sides in Spain, though, and a similar effort will probably see them advance.
