Manchester City vs Watford in the Premier League on Apr 23. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Manchester City vs Watford in the Premier League on Apr 23. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

With Manchester City looking to keep Liverpool at bay in the title hunt, this week has been just as important as any other and with a home clash with Brighton taking place just days before, it is a return to the Etihad this weekend.

As for Watford, they have lost each of their last 10 Premier League outings at Vicarage Road and with this statistic in mind, manager Roy Hodgson will arguably be delighted with an away day this weekend.

Manchester City And Over 3.5 Goals

Although Watford have fared slightly better on the road, they look likely to hit the skids at Manchester City and this is something that I have considered when looking at all the leading bookmakers.

Because with a home win on its own doing very little in terms of value, I am going to have to add a bit more meat to the bones and thankfully, I have found a market that will allow me to do exactly that.

Manchester City Form, squad news, opinion

After defeat in the FA Cup, Pep Guardiola’s football battle is now down to two fronts and with Real Madrid lying in wait at the weekend, he must first deal with a Watford side who are struggling to avoid the drop.

A fixture that although looks simple on paper, could also offer something of a banana skin at the same time and with the Premier League being known for throwing up twists and turns when you least expect them, this is something that Guardiola and his men must be aware of.

Because with the Brighton game behind them in midweek, the race for this season’s Premier League crown has now become a lot shorter and with Liverpool set to push them all the way, now is not the time for slip ups.

Something that will have been drummed into City’s cabal of stars time and time again and with the team looking to deal with recent Wembley disappointment, the best way to do that is by winning the matches that soon follow.

Of course, this City squad is interchangeable when it comes to talent and although they have suffered a number of knocks in recent weeks, that should mean very little for the visit of Watford at the weekend.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the visit of Watford, there are no new injuries for Pep Guardiola to worry about and although a number of key names have suffered knocks in recent weeks, City should be at full strength this weekend.

Watford Form, squad news, opinion

One of football’s unwritten rules for survival is this: although struggling teams will not win many games per season, they must attempt to build something of a fortress at their own ground.

Do this and your chances of survival at the end of the season will increase. Fail to do this and your chances of relegation will only multiply and when you look at Watford’s form at Vicarage Road, this is exactly what has happened.

Played 10 at Vicarage Road, lost all 10. That has been the tale of the tape for Watford in recent months and you only have to look at the final minutes of their encounter with Brentford last Saturday, to measure what a frustrating campaign it has been.

With the score tied at one each, Watford spurned what was all but an open goal in the dying seconds of the game. Fast forward to even less time in the game and Brentford have managed to snatch a winner.

Delight for the Bees, despair for the Hornets. Despair that has done little to aid their quest to stay up and with the prognosis looking worse by the week, time is running out to attempt a great escape from the bottom three.

In terms of injuries and suspensions for the trip to Manchester City, there are no new injury concerns for manager Roy Hodgson to deal with and once again, this means that only Nicolas N’Koulou is absent this weekend.

History

When it comes to the history of Manchester City and Watford, it is the Etihad who have come out on top more often than not and the most memorable clash between the two was the 2019 FA Cup final - a game that City ran out 6-0 winners at Wembley.

pointer right
In terms of their overall head-to-head record, Manchester City have won on 21 occasions, Watford 6 and there have been 5 draws

About the Venue

The Etihad opened in 2002 and holds up to 55,017 supporters.

After originally being built for the purpose of the Manchester Commonwealth Games, it was football that then became its primary use soon after and whereas before it was known as the City of Manchester Stadium, it is now known as the Etihad.

A stadium that has homed some of the world’s best players and managers and when it comes to golden moments, there has been plenty of them all. None more so than in 2012 and you only have to mention the word Aguero to evoke football’s greatest memory.

Conclusion

When it comes to the Premier League outright odds, a lot will depend on what happens in midweek and if Manchester City can clear the hurdle of Brighton, then their odds may shorten even further.

quotes
While when it comes to the odds for relegation, Watford are looking more of a certainty by the week and if they do lose at the Etihad, then their return to the EFL Championship will not be all that far away.
