Man City vs Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on April 5, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

Man City vs Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on April 5, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

Man City host Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Pep Guardiola’s side desperate to take a positive result with them to the Spanish capital in a week’s time.

The two sides had differing degrees of success in the group stage, with City topping Group A ahead of PSG after collecting 12 points from their six games, which came from four wins and two defeats.

As for Atleti, they scraped through in second place in Group B, winning just two of their six outings along with one draw and three defeats.

Nevertheless, both sides achieved their ultimate goal of advancing, and while Guardiola’s men breezed past Sporting Lisbon 5-0 on aggregate in the Round of 16, it was again a little more tricky for the Spaniards who eliminated Man Utd 2-1 on aggregate after a key win at Old Trafford in the second leg.

Man City to win and Both Teams to Score

These are two top-class squads with players capable of making the difference with a moment of brilliance, and that in turn makes this a difficult tie to predict.

That said, Atleti have been in great form domestically in recent times, winning five game on the bounce prior to the international break, which in turn has dragged them back into the top four in La Liga.

As they showed against Man Utd in the last round, they are capable of frustrating sides with their tactical know-how and have the firepower in the side to punish teams.

However, it’s going to take a mammoth effort to keep City’s stars quiet for 90 minutes, and so while they’ll get on the scoresheet at some stage, they’ll have a deficit to overturn in the second leg.

We can’t ignore the odds of 9/4– available with SportNation as well with all reliable sports betting sites – for a Man City win with Both Teams to Score.

Man City Form, squad news, opinion

While they’ve been strong in Europe, and particularly comfortable against Sporting Lisbon in the last round, Man City have stuttered in the Premier League.

Prior to the international break they dropped five points over the course of four games, thus allowing rivals Liverpool to close the gap to just one point and put real pressure on them.

As they continue to try and compete across multiple fronts, time will tell if they can manage that as well as they have done in recent years, as they’ll certainly face a stubborn and physical Atleti side ready to try and take them out of their comfort zone.

Ruben Dias was sidelined before the break with injury and so it remains to be seen if he’s ready to return, but other than that, Guardiola doesn’t have any fresh concerns barring any late setbacks and he’ll be confident in the quality and depth he has in the squad.

Atletico Madrid form, squad news, opinion

As noted above, the Spanish giants were in stunning form prior to the break, winning five La Liga games in a row, scoring 11 goals and conceding just two.

Coupled with knocking Man Utd out of this competition, it was a brilliant month or so for Diego Simeone and his men, and so they’ll be very confident in their ability to upset the odds once again.

Sime Vrsaljko, Thomas Lemar, Matheus Cunha and Daniel Wass have all been on the sidelines in recent weeks, and so while Simeone will hope for good news on the injury front in the coming weeks, he’ll hope that’s the extent of his absentees heading into this game.

While they did struggle in the first half of the season, Simeone has got his side back on track and they’ve rediscovered the identity and qualities that make them such a difficult team to play against. One thing that is guaranteed is that they will make this as tough as possible for City.

History

These two sides will face off for the first time in their histories and so there is no head-to-head record to assess between them.

What is clear from looking at the history books though is that Atleti boast the superior European pedigree having been runners-up in this competition under Simeone in 2014 and 2016.

Additionally, they won the Europa League in 2010, 2012 and 2018 before going on to win the UEFA Super Cup in each of those three years.

With that in mind, they certainly know what it takes to win big games in European competition.

About the Venue

The Etihad Stadium holds 55,000 supporters, and for a game of this magnitude against top-class opposition, the expectation is that it will be sell-out.

While it’s not known for being one for louder stadiums across Europe, European nights in the Champions League bring something special to the atmosphere and Guardiola will undoubtedly be hoping that the City fans get behind the team in this one.

What is certain is that they will face a vociferous welcome at the Wanda Metropolitano in the second leg, while Atleti showed in their recent win at City’s neighbours at Old Trafford, they will not be fazed by their surroundings and are a more than capable side on the road.

Conclusion

Expect Atleti to make this a physical game as they look to prevent City from getting into their rhythm and playing their style of football at their tempo.

With the attacking quality that they have, the visitors will be a threat on the counter attack and that is why they’re a good bet to get on the scoresheet.

However, as good as they are defensively in terms of discipline and shape, it’s going to take a near-on perfect display to shut Man City out over 90 minutes given the talent they have in the starting XI and on the bench.

Back the hosts to get the win but with the tie set up perfectly for the second leg next week.
