Lille vs Chelsea in the Champions League on Mar 16. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Lille vs Chelsea in the Champions League on Mar 16. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

A 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge sees Chelsea in command heading to France for the second leg of this Champions League Round of 16 clash.

The Blues made a dominant start to that first leg and quickly led through Kai Havertz, who was starting in a false nine role after Romelu Lukaku was dropped to the bench. The German international headed home from a Hakim Ziyech cross on the 7th minute mark, and Christian Pulisic made it 2-0 in the second half after a driving run and assist from N’Golo Kante.

Lille slowly grew into the game, but their inferior quality was the difference in the end. They’ll still feel they have hope with the deficit only at two, but they’ll need a much-improved display - especially with Chelsea likely to be happy to control things without much urgency. The odds of 20/1 with trusted betting sites on the visitors to progress, highlights the size of the task the Ligue 1 side have on their hands.

Chelsea To Win To Nil

Thomas Tuchel was unhappy with his side’s tempo in parts in that first leg, so there’ll likely be emphasis on Chelsea going out to get at least another goal in the tie before they start thinking about seeing the game out with what they have.

Even with that mentality, though, Chelsea will remain hard to break down, and even subconsciously, sitting on a 2-0 lead will probably mean a more conservative approach from the players.

That said, Lille have no choice but to throw more men forward in hopes of getting back into the contest. That ultimately could play into Chelsea’s hands. In the previous leg, Lille were unable to pose much of a threat, and although they’re now at home, it’s hard to see that changing too much here. Scoring at home in the Champions League has been a bit of an issue for the hosts too, they’ve registered just once in their last four in this competition at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

We’re expecting Chelsea to control things again, and it could be another clean sheet on the cards for Tuchel’s side as they look to negotiate their way into the quarter finals. They can certainly nick it on the night too, so a Chelsea To Win To Nil at odds of 2/1 (SportNation) is the match tip.

Lille Form, squad news, opinion

Things haven’t been quite as sweet this season compared to last term for reigning Ligue 1 champions Lille, and it’s tough to see them having enough to get the better of the current Champions League holders here.

They were competitive without being dangerous in London, but they are at least creeping back into some form after a tough start to the calendar year.

Prior to facing Saint-Etienne at the weekend, they’ve won three of their last four league matches, all without conceding a goal. That said, breaking down this Chelsea team without leaving themselves too vulnerable at the back is a totally different challenge.

Chelsea Form, squad news, opinion

Chelsea’s defence of their Champions League crown reads ‘so far so good’ at this stage. It was a fairly straightforward 90 minutes for Tuchel’s men in the first leg, although the Blues boss suggested it wasn’t quite the complete performance in terms of consistent intensity.

That won’t quite need to be the requirement here, but Tuchel is unlikely to let his side take their foot off the gas too much - even though they have a cushty lead.

The latest Champions League betting odds have Chelsea at 9/1 for them to successfully retain their Champions League title. They’re building some nice momentum heading into the business end of the season, so back-to-back triumphs in this tournament certainly can’t be ruled out.

This is the fourth meeting between the sides. Before their encounter in the first leg of this tie, they met in the Champions League group stages back in 2019. Chelsea were victorious by two goals to one both home and away that season.

About the Venue

The Stade Pierre-Mauroy is a relatively new stadium, given it was built just ten years ago. It has several modern features including a retractable roof and multiple floor features, while its energy is supplied by solar panels and windmills. Its maximum capacity is 50,186.

Chelsea sit in a relatively comfortable position after that first leg, and all being well it should be a pretty smooth journey to the next round.

Lille might offer more going forward now at home, but they were pretty blunt in attack at Stamford Bridge, and this Blues team should be too solid for their French opponents to cause them much issue.
