Two teams who are separated by only three places in Serie A, but their realistic expectations are slightly different.

Draw

There’s a lot of things pointing towards this being a pretty tight and even contest. Napoli have somewhat rediscovered that same groove in which they started the campaign in, but Lazio are a very tough nut to crack when on their own patch.

Lazio are without a defeat in their last five matches, while Napoli’s are on a seven-game unbeaten run came of their own.

The Stadio Olimpico has been a fortress for Lazio over the past year. The Biancocelesti have lost just one Serie A home game since December 2020. It’s a run that stretches 25 matches, and they’ve managed 19 wins along the way too.

Against an on-song Napoli team, it won’t be easy to dictate the play like they so often do on their own patch, though. The visitors have only conceded four in their last six league games, and it’s likely to be a fairly even 90 minutes. Therefore, the Draw at odds of 5/2 with bet365 looks a good betting play.

Lazio Form, squad news, opinion

Lazio’s recent form reads a bit patchy, but when you isolate it to their Serie A outings, they’ve been in pretty good nick.

This month, they’ve suffered a 4-0 defeat to AC Milan in the Coppa Italia, and a 2-1 Europa League loss to Porto, but they’ve lost just one of nine in the league.

That has seen them enter the tussle for a Champions League spot - they’re currently just four points behind 4th placed Juventus.

Dropping points against lowly Udinese will be seen as a disappointment, but prior to that in Serie A, they registered 3-0 wins over both Bologna and Fiorentina respectively.

Pedro Rodriquez, Manuel Lazzari and Francesco Acerbi are the three players currently on the sidelines for the hosts.

Napoli Form, squad news, opinion

The battle for the Scudetto is a seriously hot one at this stage of the season. Napoli are 3rd, but they’re just two points behind leaders AC Milan, as they ultimately seek to end a 32-year wait for another Italian top flight trophy.

They faced struggling Cagliari in their last Serie A match, drawing 1-1, but it was a seriously off-colour performance from Luciano Spalletti’s side.

They had won four out of five in the league before that, and with three clean sheets from their last five Serie A away games, Lazio will have to work hard to get on the scoresheet here.

Gli Azzurri could be without Lorenzo Inzigne after suffering a thigh problem in training. He joins Andre Zambo Anguissa, Piotr Zielinski, Stanislav Lobotka, Matteo Politano and Hirving Lozano on a fairly lengthy injury list for the visitors.

History

Napoli come out on top in the head-to-head bracket here with 23 wins - compared to Lazio’s 17 - from the 49 meetings between the two sides.

Their match earlier this term saw Napoli stuff Maurizio Sarri’s men 4-0 with goals from Piotr Zielinski, Fabian Ruiz, and a brace from Dries Mertens.

In the pair’s last four clashes, there’s been a total of 17 goals.

About the Venue

The Stadio Olimpico is the home of both Lazio and Roma. It’s a multi-purpose stadium built in 1927 that holds up to 70,634 people. It doesn’t just get used for football - other sports and concerts occasionally take place there too.

The Curva Nord is used as the home end when Lazio have home games there, and you can usually guarantee some pretty scenery to go along with a bouncy atmosphere.

Conclusion

It’s a meeting of two in-form sides, both with plenty to play for at this stage of the campaign. The hosts are notoriously tough to play against at the Stadio Olimpico, but Napoli have plenty of weapons in their locker.

So, with that in mind, we could see a pretty close affair. That doesn’t mean it won’t be entertaining, though. Both teams like to attack with their fairly free-flowing styles, so expect plenty of chances at both ends.
