The standout Serie A fixture of the weekend is undoubtedly the Milan derby on Saturday evening.
Inter are starting to distance themselves slightly from the chasing pack, but AC Milan will see this as a perfect opportunity to firmly get back into the title race.
A defeat for Stefano Pioli’s men would put them seven points behind the Nerazzurri, and the current league leaders also have a game in hand, so this one looks pivotal when it comes to their Scudetto chances this season.
Inter look pretty good value for the win here. It’s a huge derby game that both sides will certainly be up for, but the Serie A leaders have the edge when it comes to overall quality and organisation.
Those factors are huge when it comes to contests like this, and with AC Milan being a tad inconsistent lately, backing Simone Inzaghi’s men to gain all three points looks the wise way to go.
That’s available at 5/6, but it’s worth adding something to bolster the odds. You can usually rely on this meeting to provide plenty of action and drama. Both teams have scored in four of the last five meetings between the two.
Inter have won four of their last five games in all competitions, and in each of those victories they’ve conceded at least once along the way. They generally have a very sturdy defence, but AC Milan certainly have enough to get on the scoresheet.
We don’t think they’ll have quite what’s required to come away with anything, though, so the selection is Inter Milan To Win And Both Teams To Score at odds of 12/5 with 888.
Inter have simply been an unstoppable machine in the league, pretty much since the start of last season. They’re a team who usually find a way of getting a positive result, even when they’re not at their best. The Nerazzurri have lost just two league games since January of last year.
They’re in pretty good nick at the moment too. Inzaghi’s men have won nine of their last ten Serie A games, and it’s tough to realistically see any other side stopping them from winning back-to-back titles in the Italian top flight.
When last seen in action, they beat struggling Venezia by two goals to one. It took until the 90th minute for them to find the winner, though, in a game they dominated. Denzel Dumfries put in a perfectly weighted cross for Edin Dzeko, and the Bosnian powerfully headed home to give Inter the win.
Dzeko has proven to be a brilliant signing on a free. The striker is Inter’s top scorer in all competitions alongside Lautaro Martinez - both have twelve goals so far this campaign.
The Milan giants secured the services of left-sided German Robin Gosens in the January transfer window. Gosens joined on loan from Atalanta until the end of the term, but he will be unavailable for this game due to a hamstring injury he suffered in September.
It’s been a pretty tough few months for AC Milan. Consistency has been a severe issue for them and significantly it’s seen them lose ground in the Serie A title race.
Winning runs have only been in short bursts, and Piolo’s side haven’t quite managed to return to the level they were at, at the start of the campaign. There’s been good reason for that, though - Covid issues and injuries are certainly playing a part.
In their last league game, they drew 0-0 against Juventus. The Old Lady rarely threatened that day, but Milan struggled to find a breakthrough and they had to settle for a draw. Dropped points wasn’t the only problem from that match, though. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had to be taken off midway through the first half. An achilles tendon issue was the reason for that, and it’s unclear whether he’ll be back in time for this one.
Prior to that outing against Juventus, Milan lost 2-1 at home to Spezia, and that was after winning four games on the bounce. It’s hard to predict what AC Milan might turn up, but they’ll have to be at their very best to be competitive here.
The Rossoneri will be without central defender Fikayo Tomori, who is still recovering from minor knee surgery.
In Italy, this is known as the Derby della Madonnina and is a clash between two footballing giants. The Milan clubs have been involved in some historic moments when facing each other, and some top-class players have donned the shirt of both sides.
They’ve met a total of 69 times in the past. Inter just edge the head-to-head record, winning 27 of those games, compared to AC Milan’s 23 victories.
In terms of recent meetings, six of the last eight have gone the way of Inter, including two of the last three.
The San Siro is one of the most iconic grounds in world football. It opened in 1926 and has a capacity of just over 80,000.
Famously, both Inter Milan and AC Milan share the stadium, but the plans are in place for the San Siro to be demolished. It’s anticipated the new stadium the pair will move into - dubbed ‘The Cathedral - will be ready in 2027.
This is a game that is potentially very important to the Serie A title race. Inter are in pretty dominant form currently and they’ll be smelling blood against an AC Milan side who are struggling to fully find their stride at the moment.
