Huddersfield Town vs Barnsley in the Championship on Apr 22. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Huddersfield Town vs Barnsley in the Championship on Apr 22. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

There’s Championship action on Friday night with the Yorkshire derby clash between Huddersfield and Barnsley.

The two have been competing at the opposite ends of the table all season, and with Barnsley’s relegation fate all but sealed, the hosts will feel pretty confident of getting a victory.

Having played two more games than second-placed Bournemouth, Huddersfield look set to compete in the play-offs.

That’s a position Barnsley found themselves in this time last season, but it’s been a completely different campaign for the Tykes this time around, all for the wrong reasons. Failure to win here would mathematically confirm their relegation to League One, but even before this contest, their chances of staying up are less than slim.

The Terriers are odds-on favourites for this one at 3/5 (bet365) , with Barnsley the 5/1 outsiders. (bet365)

Huddersfield To Win To Nil

Barnsley haven’t quite shown the fight required the last few weeks to stay in the division, so with the drop to League One all but confirmed, it’s tough to see them getting anything here.

Couple that with them facing a strong and solid Huddersfield side, a home win looks to be on the cards.

The 3/5 on offer for the hosts (888sport) represents decent value but it’s worth adding another branch to the bet for something a bit chunkier odds-wise.

Barnsley are the Championship’s lowest scorers, and they’ve been pretty toothless in the attacking department lately too. Huddersfield have kept a clean sheet in three of their last four outings, so our betting selection for the game is Huddersfield To Win To Nil at 8/5 (Betway) .

Huddersfield Town Form, squad news, opinion

At the start of the campaign, not many would have expected Huddersfield to be at the dizzy heights of 3rd come the business end of the season - emphasising what a great job boss Carlos Corberan has done with the West Yorkshire club.

The Terriers have won three of their last four Championship games, including wins over potential play-off contenders Middlesbrough and Luton Town.

Huddersfield’s solid nature as a unit is certainly one of the factors that has seen them be so successful this term, and three clean sheets in their last four matches has seen them resume those ways after a slightly patchy four games prior to that.

Barnsley Form, squad news, opinion

After being within touching distance of the Premier League last season, Barnsley are now staring down the League One barrel just one year on.

A win here would likely only prolong confirmation of their relegation, and another rebuild looks on the horizon for the Tykes.

There was some hope of them beating the drop several weeks ago after a spark in their form, but three defeats in their last five games has seen them slip to the bottom of the Championship.

The Reds’ form away from home this season doesn’t make for great reading either. They’ve picked up just one win from 21 Championship games on the road, losing 15 of them

History

It’s fairly close in terms of the head-to-head record between these two sides. Barnsley just edge it in the wins column at 14-12, from the pairs’ 32 encounters.

pointer right
They’ve met twice this season already. Huddersfield won 1-0 in their FA Cup fourth round matchup in January, and it was a 1-1 draw at Oakwell when they clashed earlier this term in the league.

One of the most famous games between the two was back in 2013 on the final day of the Championship season. It ended 2-2, but given the scores around the league meant that result was enough to see both teams avoid relegation, in extraordinary scenes, Barnsley goalkeeper Luke Steele was left to keep the ball without pressure in the final few minutes so the game ended as a draw - prompting jubilant scenes from both supporters.

About the Venue

The John Smith’s Stadium is a relatively ‘new’ ground when you compare it to many other team’s patches. It opened in 1994 and has a capacity of 24,121. The footballing team of Huddersfield aren’t the only club to use it, with Rugby League side Huddersfield Giants also calling it home.

Conclusion

Huddersfield will be looking to see out a brilliant league campaign on a high as they aim to build some strong momentum behind them heading into the Championship play-offs.

quotes
Barnsley’s relegation to League One will be confirmed if they fail to win and given how the two sides have been playing of late, that looks a likely outcome.
