Celtic vs Rangers in the Scottish Premiership on Feb 2. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Celtic vs Rangers in the Scottish Premiership on Feb 2. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Due to the original date of this fixture having to be rearranged as a result of rising Covid-19 cases at the time, we’re set for a beauty of a midweek game in the Scottish Premiership as the Old Firm rivals clash.

To add even more spice to the match, the pair are separated by just two points in the league. Rangers currently hold top spot, but they dropped points away at Ross County when last in action.

Out of the two, Celtic are marginally in better form, having won twelve of their last thirteen matches across all competitions, but in such a big derby game, stats like that don’t always hold as much weight as they usually would.

  • Kindly note that all information in this preview, including whether or not the event will take place, is subject to change due to Covid-19.

1-1 Correct Score

With home advantage, Celtic are favourites with the bookies for this one. It means Rangers are generally priced at around 14/5, which given the position they’re in, looks quite appealing.

Celtic haven’t beaten Rangers since 2019, but the gap between the two does seem to have edged closer this season - like the table suggests.

The hosts are unbeaten at Celtic Park in the league since January of last year - a run stretching seventeen games. Rangers are unbeaten in their last ten Scottish Premiership games away from home, so we could be looking at a result where the points are shared.

All of Celtic’s last nine matches at home in the league have seen three goals or less. You rarely get an Old Firm game that doesn’t have plenty of action, but we don’t see a lot of that coming in the goals department here. Both teams have remained pretty solid this campaign, and overall, they might cancel each other out a tad.

It should be quite an even contest. So, with that in mind, our selection for the game is 1-1 on the Correct Score market, which is available at 6/1 with betfred. That was also the same scoreline when these two met on the Hoops’ own patch.

Celtic Form, squad news, opinion

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou will be pleased with how his side are playing at the minute. They might not be blowing teams away, but they’re doing the most important thing in football, and that’s getting positive results.

The Bhoys have been flying during the last few months. Across all competitions they’re unbeaten in their last thirteen outings. Celtic’s last defeat came in the Europa League - a 3-2 loss away at Bayer Leverkusen.

You have to go back to mid-September for when they last tasted defeat domestically, and the current run they’re on will give them plenty of confidence heading into such a big fixture.

Hovering over them, however, is the fact they haven’t beaten Rangers in their last seven attempts. They know if they put an end to that run here, they’ll leapfrog their fierce rivals in the table, but having lost their last three against the Gers, taking a point from this probably won’t be deemed a bad result by Postecoglou.

The home side will be without Nir Britton after the Israeli midfielder was sent off in their last-gasp 1-0 win against Dundee United at the weekend. Both Tomas Rogic and Daizen Maeda are likely to be unavailable also, due to international duty. The pair haven’t been officially ruled out, though, as the club are looking into the possibility of flying them back immediately after finishing commitments with their country to make it back to Glasgow in time for the game.

Rangers United Form, squad news, opinion

On the face of it, Rangers are in a pretty decent position in the league. However, they’ve taken five points from the last nine available in the Scottish Premiership, meaning Celtic are now breathing down their necks in the table.

After coming back from 2-1 down at the weekend to lead 3-2 against Ross Country, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side conceded six minutes deep into stoppage time. A scramble after a corner, and failure from the Teddy Bears to clear their lines (including untidy goalkeeping from Allan McGregor) meant two points were ultimately dropped.

It makes this one an even bigger game, given the gap in the standings between them and Celtic is now just two points. Rangers have certainly had the edge over their rivals in recent years, but the Hoops are looking stronger this campaign.

A key absentee for the visitors is current top goalscorer Alfredo Morelos, who is on international duty with Colombia.

History

One of the biggest rivalries in world football, with a deep history on and off the pitch. The Old Firm Cerby sees the biggest two clubs in Scotland clash.

They’ve faced each other 105 times before, with Celtic winning 46 times, and Rangers 39 times.

About the Venue

Celtic Park is pretty loud at the best of times, but it reaches another level when Rangers pay a visit. The ground was built in 1892, and it’s the largest football stadium in Scotland, with a capacity of 60,411.

Current Covid rules in Scotland mean supporters will need to be vaccinated or show proof of a recent negative test to gain entry, given the attendance will be more than 10,000.

Conclusion

This has all the makings of a cracker. Not only does any Old Firm Derby come with a high level of excitement and entertainment, but with the title race between Celtic and Rangers so brilliantly poised at the moment, it adds even more significance to the game.
