Bayern Munich vs FC Salzburg in the Champions League on Mar 8. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Bayern Munich vs FC Salzburg in the Champions League on Mar 8. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Not many would have predicted this Round of 16 Champions League tie to be as poised as it currently is, heading into the second leg in Germany.

As the Champions League latest odds suggest, though, FC Salzburg still have a mountainous task on their hands to progress against Bundesliga powerhouse Bayern Munich.

The visitors are available at 14/1 with LeoVegas for what would be considered a very unlikely win in 90 minutes, and they’re on offer at 9/1 with 888sport to qualify.

The draw in the first leg will give them plenty of belief, however, and given there’s little expectation on them to progress, they can play the game with no pressure on their backs.

You can usually rely on Bayern to get the job done, though, and it’s hard to see an outcome that doesn’t involve them making it through to the quarter-finals. They’re heavy favourites to do so at 1/12 in the ‘To Qualify’ market with Sportnation.

Bayern Munich And Over 3.5 Goals

Even with that first leg in mind - where it took a late Kingsley Coman goal to earn Bayern a draw - the home side should prove too much for Salzburg here.

Expect a dogged effort from the Austrian side, but at the Allianz Arena, Julian Nagelsmann’s men are well fancied with betting sites for good reason.

The Bavarians have won thirteen of their last fifteen Champions League home matches - losing the other two against Liverpool and PSG respectively.

It’s common knowledge that Bayern are capable of scoring a hatful on any given night, and they certainly won’t be taking their opposition lightly after the events of the first leg. So, expect full focus from the Bundesliga leaders.

Salzburg are certainly capable of getting on the scoresheet, but Munich should be comfortably outscoring them if they’re at their best.

There’s been four or more goals in three of Bayern’s last four European home games, and also in three of their last four Bundesliga matches.

So, with a home win and several goals potentially on the cards, our betting pick is Bayern Munich To Win And Over 3.5 Goals at odds of 11/10 with bet365.

Bayern Munich Form, squad news, opinion

Bayern lacked their usual sharpness in the first leg, and although they got better as the game went on, they’ll be aiming for a much-improved all-round performance in front of their home crowd.

Clear chances were at a premium for them in Salzburg, but it’s likely they’ll dominate the play in this one and find openings a bit easier to come by.

They’ve won two on the bounce in the league following the draw against their opponents here, and Nagelsmann will want his side’s signature verve to be at a consistently high level now we’re entering the business end of the campaign.

Latest Champions League betting odds have Bayern as third-favourites to win this season’s competition at 5/1.

FC Salzburg Form, squad news, opinion

It’ll be interesting to see what approach Salzburg manager Matthias Jaissle takes given the position his side are in. If the first leg is anything to go by, it’s likely he’ll set up his side to try and frustrate Bayern by being tough to break down and well organised. In the previous leg they got their goal on the break, so being a threat on the counterattack could be the plan once again.

That was Salzburg’s first ever taste of Champions League knockout football, and regardless of the outcome here, they’ll come away with some good experience for future European adventures.

At the time of writing they’re 15 points clear at the top of the Austrian Football Bundesliga, so there’s no doubt they can put all of their energy into this outing.

The sides have only met three times previously, with Bayern Munich winning the two games prior to the 1-1 draw in the first leg of this tie.

The two in question were in last season’s Champions League group stages, and Bayern won 6-2 in Austria, before a 3-1 home win.

About the Venue

With its distinctive and unique plastic panels, along with a full colour-changing exterior, the Allianz Arena is a beauty in the stadium world of football.

It holds up to 75,024 fans and has small standing areas. You can usually rely on a lively atmosphere from the Bayern faithful, but with Covid restrictions still currently in place in Germany, only a maximum of 10,000 fans are permitted at present.

Things are all level at the halfway stage of the tie, but now in Munich, Bayern are expected to progress without much issue. Salzburg won't go down without a fight, but the quality of the hosts should prevail on the night.
