Bayer Leverkusen vs Atalanta in the Europa League on Mar 17. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

Bayer Leverkusen vs Atalanta in the Europa League on Mar 17. 2022 - Odds & Prediction

If this one matches the entertainment level shown in the first leg between these two sides, we’re in for a cracker of a game.

It’s Atalanta who hold the advantage after a 3-2 victory at the Gewiss Stadium. Bayer Leverkusen were the ones who opened the scoring on the 11th minute mark of that first leg - Charles Aranguiz with a neat finish from the edge of the box after some smart passing from the Bundesliga club. The following three goals in the game were all from Atalanta, though. Ruslan Malinovsky equalised, before a Luis Muriel brace gave Gian Piero Gasperini’s men a 3-1 lead. Moussa Diaby's low curling effort in the 63rd minute made sure Leverkusen remained firmly in the tie.

There’s not too much splitting the pair in the market, with Leverkusen edging favouritism at 27/20 (bet365). Unexpectedly, the latest Europa League odds have Atalanta as odds-on favourites to progress at 4/9.(SportNation)

Both Teams To Score And Over 2.5 Goals

With the tie now shifting to Germany, it’s one that’s well poised given Leverkusen will fancy their chances of getting a win in front of their home crowd.

Atalanta have been a tad hit and miss away from home so far this calendar year, whereas Leverkusen have won seven of their last ten across all competitions at the BayArena. That said, the hosts have won just one of their last five matches - losing three in that time - including a 1-0 home defeat against Cologne at the weekend. So, they don’t exactly come into this game with much momentum.

There were plenty of indicators from the previous leg to suggest these are pretty evenly matched teams overall, but it’s probably wise to stay away from the match result market given a solid case can be made for all three potential outcomes.

Instead, delving into the goals market looks like a smart play. All three of Leverkusen’s home games in the Europa League this season saw three or more goals, and the same can be said for all three of Atalanta’s matches in the competition this season, since they dropped down from the Champions League.

With both sides having goals in them, the selection is Both Teams To Score And Over 2.5 Goals at odds of 4/5 with 888sport.

Bayer Leverkusen Form, squad news, opinion

Die Werkself have hit a bit of a rough patch in the last month or so, but their performances haven’t been that bad when you dive deeper in.

They’ve won just one of their last five, but that stretch includes a 1-1 draw against Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, and their display in the previous leg of this tie certainly wasn’t poor either, despite the end result.

Their overall form at the BayArena this campaign will certainly give them hope of turning this tie around - they won all three of their home games in the group stages of this competition.

On the sidelines for the hosts are Robert Andrich, Patrik Schick, Karim Bellarabi and Andrey Lunev.

Atalanta Form, squad news, opinion

It can be tough to know what to expect from this Atalanta side this season. They either seem to be red-hot in front of goal, or the complete opposite.

They’ve drawn blanks in two of their last three games - including a 0-0 draw against second-bottom Genoa in Serie A at the weekend.

Leverkusen have no choice but to go for it in this one, though, and any type of open game will suit Atalanta down to the ground. We could see a very similar battle to the one in the previous leg, but ultimately it might come down to what mood Gasperini’s side turn up in.

The visitors will be without Alexey Miranchuk, Josip Ilicic and Duván Zapata, who are all on the injury list.

This is just the second time the teams have met after Atalanta’s victory in the first leg.

About the Venue

The distinctive BayArena has been the home of Bayer Leverkusen since it opened back in 1958. It has a horseshoe design with one main tier, and a smaller second one above it. Additionally, it has an oval roof, and a small standing section for home supporters. 30,210 is the ground's maximum capacity.

Regardless of the outcome, this should be an entertaining affair. It was apparent in the first leg how these two teams like to play free-flowing, attacking football, and the fact there’s just a goal between them on aggregate sprinkles in more intrigue.

Atalanta are marginally in command, but they do blow hot and cold sometimes, and Leverkusen are a strong home outfit.
