Atletico Madrid vs Man City in the Champions League on April 13, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

Atletico Madrid vs Man City in the Champions League on April 13, 2022 – Odds & Prediction

Man City take a slender 1-0 win with them to the Spanish capital as they face Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Kevin De Bruyne’s second-half goal at the Etihad was all that split the two sides in the first meeting, and so while Pep Guardiola will be delighted with the result, he’ll know that there is plenty of work left to do at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Nevertheless, the reigning Premier League champions are favourites to win on the night at 5/6 (bet365), while they’re available at 1/10 to win the tie(888sport).

That seems a little lopsided given the tie is still relatively finely-poised, and Atleti certainly have quality in the side to upset the odds with the La Liga outfit priced at 11/2 (SportNation) to advance to the semi-finals.

Time will tell who prevails, but both sides will need to be at their very best to book their spot in the final four.

Man City to win the tie in Extra Time

City have a lot of quality in the final third, and they could prefer that they can counter-attack in Madrid in the second leg rather than try to break down a stubborn defence.

That said, this is going to be a cagey encounter where both sides will want to avoid falling behind early, and with the emphasis on Atleti to get back into this, they will be scrapping across the pitch to draw themselves level.

With that in mind, there is every chance that this goes beyond 90 minutes, but with the class that Guardiola has at his disposal, the visitors will be confident of eventually getting the job done in the crunch moments.

With that in mind, we can’t ignore the odds of 12/1 (LeoVegas) – as well available with all of the reliable sports betting sites – for Man City to win the tie in Extra Time.

Atletico Madrid Form, squad news, opinion

Atleti scraped through the group stage after picking up seven points from their six games, winning two games, drawing one and losing three.

Scoring goals was a real problem for Diego Simeone’s men, as they managed just seven in those six outings, albeit they only conceded eight.

While they were brilliant against Man Utd in the last round, they don’t have the same circumstances of heading to Manchester for the second leg and picking up a relatively shock win.

They’re at home for this one, and they’ll be expected to get on the front-foot and put pressure on City, and it remains to be seen if they’ve got the creativity and class to create openings.

Hector Herrera and Jose Gimenez are both expected to be out, but they’ve still got plenty of experience and ability across the pitch.

Man City form, squad news, opinion

City in contrast picked up four wins in their six group games, finishing above PSG to top Group A.

They scored 18 goals and conceded 10 in those outings, while they were superb in the away leg in the previous round as they secured a 5-0 win over Sporting.

However, their two defeats in the group stage were on the road, a 2-0 loss at PSG and a 2-1 defeat at RB Leipzig, and so Atleti will be hoping for a similar outcome.

Ruben Dias could be a doubt for them, but that aside, they’ll be hoping that there are no fresh late setbacks heading to Spain off the back of their showdown with Liverpool in the Premier League.

With the quality in depth that Guardiola has available though, he’ll be confident that his side will find the answers to get the job done.

There’s not much history to go on here as these two sides met for the first time in competitive action last week.

While Atleti looked to play it safe in the first leg and try to keep their defensive shape to take a positive result back home, the second leg could follow a similar pattern early on in particular before it opens up.

However, with little in the way of a head-to-head record to assess how they could fare in Madrid, it remains to be seen who produces on the night.

About the Venue

The Wanda Metropolitano has a capacity of just over 68,000, and given the importance of this game coupled with the quality of the opposition, the fans will turn up and pack the stadium.

That in turn will make it a lively atmosphere, something Simeone will hope his players can feed off as he likes to be animated on the sidelines too.

However, City have enough experience and players who have seen it all before to know how to handle it, and so it remains to be seen if they can keep the home faithful quiet.

This has all the hallmarks of a close encounter, as Atleti will not want to concede early and allow City to suck the atmosphere out of the stadium.

The hosts will arguably look to frustrate them in the early stages, get a foothold in the game and try to come on strong as the drama unfolds.

That in turn opens up the possibility of Atleti grabbing a goal on the night to force extra time, but with the firepower that they possess, it’s going to take something special to keep City shackled all night and their quality will eventually make the difference.
