Portugal – Euro 2024 Overview

Portugal have a tradition of success at the European Championships, with the highlight being Euro 2016 when they took the title.  In addition, they reached the final of Euro 2004 and, on the global stage, impressed with a fourth place in the 2006 World Cup.

How Portugal qualified Euro 2024

Portugal qualified with a 100% record in their qualifying group. In a group with Slovakia , Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Liechtenstein, Portugal took maximum points, scoring 36 and conceding only two. Ronaldo, now at Al Nassr was Portugal’s top scorer with 10 goals andone assist. Bruno Fernandes contributed six goals and eight assists.

Portugal’s European Championship squad

It is a star-studded Portugal that heads to Germany this summer. Roberto Martínez, who took over as the new national team coach after the World Cup in Qatar, has a high quality squad to choose from. According to the German site Transfermarkt, there are only two nations with higher rated players: England and France.

• Cristiano Ronaldo – “CR7” is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest footballers of all time. Despite his age of 39, he still maintains a high standard. There are many indications that Euro 2024 in Germany will be Ronaldo’s last major championship. On his day Ronaldo had blistering pace, power, amazing dribbling skills, close control, aerial ability who was able to take and create chances. He was capable of playing right across the front line. • Rúben Dias – Dias is a technically gifted and reliable defender for Manchester City and Portugal. He is a robust and intelligent defender who excels with his strong positioning and ability to win duels. Dias has quickly become a central figure in both City’s and Portugal’s defensive line and will clearly be a key player in the Euros.
• Bernardo Silva – Clubmate of Dias at Manchester City. “Bubblegum” as Bernardo Silva is nicknamed among City fans is known for his exceptional technique, speed and understanding of the game. He has impressive ball control and the ability to create scoring chances both for himself and his teammates. In addition, Silva is known for his versatility and ability to play in different positions in midfield and attack, making him a dream player in tournament football.

Portugal Odds at Euro 2024

Portugal are currently fifth favourites to win Euro 2024. They have an excellent and experienced coach, a number of world class players in their prime and the talismatic Ronaldo who is still one of the best goalscorers around. They are overwhelming favourites to win and to qualify from Group F. We feel that Portugal, on paper, are not quite as strong as England or France and are similar in terms of quality to Spain and host nation Germany. They definately have a realistic chance of winning and failure to emerge from the group would be a huge shock.
