Southampton v Chelsea Betting Tips & Predictions

Chelsea are odds-on favourites for their trip to the south coast to face Southampton in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Thomas Tuchel’s team won this fixture 6-0 last season and come into this match off the back of a win over Leicester, despite playing over an hour with 10 men.

Conor Gallagher is unavailable for this match after his red card at the weekend, but Kalidou Koulibaly returns from suspension for the visitors.

Southampton have four points from their first four games following the loss to Manchester United on Saturday.

Winner: Chelsea

7/10 (SpreadEx)

Chelsea have won six of their last seven matches away to Southampton.

Tuchel’s team were markedly better on the road than at home last season, winning 12 times away from Stamford Bridge and amassing 40 points in the process.

The Saints have only one point from their first two home league fixtures in 2022-23, and have conceded three goals in the process.

It has been a strange start to the season for Chelsea, with two red cards in their last two matches, but the visitors deserve their favourites status here.

Anytime Goalscorer: Raheem Sterling

2/1 (Paddy Power)

Raheem Sterling scored his first two goals for Chelsea at the weekend, and he’s a good bet to add to that tally on Tuesday night. The England international is the club’s leader in expected goals – only seven Premier League players have registered more through four matches.

Southampton are also an opponent he has enjoyed success against, with four goals in his last eight appearances against the south-coast club.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side will be more proactive out of possession than most bottom half teams, which will leave Sterling space to exploit.

Most Corners: Chelsea

9/20 (Sportingindex)

Chelsea lead the corner kick charts with 33 across their first four matches. Only one other team has more than 26 corners thus far, and 11 sides have fewer than 20. The use of wing backs tends to force corners with blocked crosses occurring frequently.

Southampton, in stark contrast, have 14 corners so far this season (just two teams have fewer).

While this is a short price, there is still value on Chelsea to have the most corners in the match, particularly with the Blues expected to dominate possession.
