Who is favourite to win?

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is a strong favourite to win this fight when we compare odds, with most bookmakers pricing Alvarez up at around 1/4 (Wiliam Hill) to win the contest .

Alvarez’s boxing record reads 57-1-2, with his only defeat coming at the hands of the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2013.

The Mexican has dominated the sport since that loss, with two fights against Gennady Golovkin the only real challenges he has faced in this time.

Dmitry Bivol is a world-class fighter and a dangerous puncher in the light-heavyweight division and at 4/1 (LeoVegas) as well with a number of bookmakers, is a sizeable underdog in Las Vegas.

Saul Canelo Alvarez v Dmitry Bivol Fight History and Current Form

The fight on May 7 will be Alvarez’s second contest at the light-heavyweight limit.

pointer right
The Mexican has dominated the sport over the past decade adding huge wins to his record, but there are still question marks above his head in the 175-lbs weight class.

His previous outing at light-heavyweight came in 2019 as he stopped an ageing Sergey Kovalev in the eleventh round of their world title fight, and Dmitry Bivol will be hoping it isn’t a Russian repeat as he defends his title against the 31-year-old.

pointer right
Bivol is a natural light-heavyweight, campaigning at the weight since turning over from the amateur ranks in 2014.

He has some excellent names on his resume – notably Jean Pascal, Joe Smith Jr. and Sullivan Barrera – but Alvarez is a different proposition altogether.

Canelo’s left hook and uppercuts have improved ten-fold over the past few years under the watchful eye of his trainer Eddy Reynoso.

Reynoso has crafted power in both of Alvarez’s hands and his footwork is so often two steps ahead of his opposition.

His chin has also stood up to the test of some big, big punchers, namely Gennady Golovkin and Sergey Kovalev, with the Mexican never looking close to being hurt when a punch is able to land.

Alvarez has passed each test he has been handed with flying colours over the past few years, beating champions Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders, Avni Yildirim and Callum Smith with ease since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bivol might not be the most exciting fighter in the current light-heavyweight crop, but the 31-year-old is well-rounded and technically superb. He has 11 knockouts on his record, but has failed to stop any of his last six opponents, winning all by unanimous decision.

Bivol’s best chance of beating Alvarez will be via the sweet science: boxing and moving and negating the front-foot pressure of the Mexican.

But it’s Alvarez who is expected to set the pace in this world championship contest.
