Which matches are the referees in charge of?

In a European Championship, a referee team can be awarded several matches and if they perform well, there is a good chance that they will continue to be trusted on and may even be allowed to referee one or two matches after the group stage. In the end, the referee who received the most praise during the tournament usually gets the honour of refereeing the European Championship final, if he is not of the same nationality as one of the final teams.

A couple of days before kick-off, UEFA will decide which matches the different referee teams will get. It will probably happen quite early during the European Football Championship 2021, as the matches are played in different countries and that means long journeys for the referees. Below, we at will post which referees that will referee the upcoming matches. When it comes to the European Football Championship, a referee may not be in charge of his own country's matches.

VAR in EURO 2020/2021

VAR - Video Assistant Referee is an aid to the referees during the European Football Championship 2021. This aid gives the referees the opportunity to contact video referees who are in a control room with better TV pictures to decide a dubious decision. The video referees have access to TV images from a number of different angles, which means that they can examine a situation in the smallest detail. It can for example be about a handball situation inside the penalty area where the referee has acquitted as he did not see that the ball touched the hand. Then the referee can choose to blow the whistle if he gets info in his earpiece from the video referees. If the video officials consider that the situation need to be investigated, then the main referee can run out to the side line to check in a TV monitor whether a penalty should be awarded or not, he or she also has the video officials in the control room for extra help.

With VAR, four different situations can be examined.

  • Goal situations - Example: Whether the ball is over the goal line or not.
  • Penalty situations - Example: Hand ball or tackle on a ball or player.
  • Situations that can lead to a red card - Example: Careless tackle with the studs.
  • Identity Check

Referee statistics EURO 2016

In the European Football Championship 2016, a total of 51 matches were played and 205 yellow cards and 3 red cards were awarded. On average, the referees gave 4.02 yellow cards per match and only 0.06 red. In the case of penalty kicks, a total of 12 were awarded. However, it should be added that they did not apply VAR in the European Championships in 2016, and there is much to suggest that we will see more penalties in the European Championships 2021.

The difference between the World Cup 2018 and 2014 was 16 penalties. In the 2014 World Cup where no VAR was used, the referees awarded 13 penalties and only 4 years later when VAR was applied for the first time, the number of penalties awarded was a full 29.
