2012: 2.45 goals per match (76 goals in 31 matches)
2016: 2.12 goals per match (109 goals in 51 matches)
The goal average has varied a lot over the years in the European Championships. The highest record is from 1976 when the European Championships were played in the former Yugoslavia. In 4 matches there was 19 goals scored. Notable was that all matches went over 3.5 goals. In the last European Championship played in France a total of 2.12 goals were scored per match, which is the lowest goal average in the European Championship since 1996 when the average ended up at a low 2.06. The lowest goal average of all times in a European Championship is 1.4 goals from 1968. A total of five matches were played, where the final was replayed after 1-1 after extra time. In this European Championship final, coin toss was used to decide which team between Italy and the Soviet Union that would advance from one of the semi-finals. This after the match ended 0-0 after extra time.
If we take a look at the premiere matches in the last four European Championships, we can see the following results:
2004: Portugal-Greece 1-2
2008: Switzerland-Czech Republic 0-1
2012: Poland-Greece 1-1
2016: France-Romania 2-1
Half of the matches have ended over 2.5 goals. The last match between France and Romania ended 2-1 to the home nation. It is the first time in four European Championships that the host nation has managed to win in an opening match. Will Italy be the second team in a row to manage this when they face Turkey at home at the Olympic Stadium in Rome on Friday?
Which teams have scored the most goals in EURO history?
Here are the teams that have scored the most goals in the European Championships over the years:
1960: Yugoslavia: 6 goals
1964: Hungary, Soviet Union & Spain: 4 goals
1968: Italy, 3 goals
1972: West Germany: 5 goals
1976: West Germany: 6 goals
1980: West Germany: 6 goals
1984: France: 14 goals
1988: Netherlands: 8 goals
1992: Germany: 7 goals

2004: Czech Republic & England: 10 goals
2008: Spain: 12 goals
2012: Spain: 12 goals
2016: France: 13 goals
It is not uncommon for the winning team in a European Championship to score the most goals as well. In the last three championships, the winners have scored the most goals. In the European Championship in 2004, however Greece was an exception as the champions only scored 7 goals in 6 matches, which was far less than the Czech Republic and England who reached 10 in just 4 matches.

Some offer long-term bets where it is a matter of betting on the total number of goals in the tournament. In the 2021 tournament, a total of 51 matches will be played. In the European Championships in 2016, a total of 109 goals were scored in as many matches. But now that VAR is in the picture, the chances are good that we will see significantly more goals because we are also going to see an increase in the number of penalty-kicks.
Which team will score the most goals in EURO 2020/2021?
Will it again be the champions of the European Football Championship who will score the most goals in the tournament? Historically, it is quite likely. If we look group by group and which teams play there, it looks like Belgium can score a lot of goals against Finland, Denmark and Russia. Belgium has a strong attack with players like Lukaku, Mertens and Carrasco at the top. In total, Belgium scored 40 goals in the European Championship qualifiers, which was the most of all teams.
In a good second place came Italy and England with 37 goals and England in particular feels interesting with a wonderful set of offensive players such as Kane, Sterling, Rashford, Sancho and Foden.
