Match Odds: Netherlands to beat Wales
Van Gaal’s side started their Nations League A campaign with an emphatic 4-1 win over Belgium – the second best team in the world, according to Fifa’s rankings – last weekend and should claim another three points in this Group 4 encounter.
Wales are a match for most international sides on their day, as they showed last Sunday when beating Ukraine to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 64 years.
But Rob Page’s side are up against it here.
This is their third match in seven days, meaning ageing stars such as Gareth Bale (32) and Aaron Ramsey (31) are unlikely to feature. The players that do, meanwhile, are probably going to be some way below their best, given the raucous celebrations that followed Wales’ historic victory.
Over/Under Total Goals: Over 3.5
It’s worth backing goals when the Netherlands play. There have been over 3.5 goals in six of their 10 matches this season.
First Goalscorer: Steven Bergwijn
Bergwijn barely features for his club, Tottenham Hotspur, but he is a vital player for the Netherlands.
The 24-year-old, who has been heavily linked with a move to Ajax this summer, plays up front alongside Memphis Depay and has scored five goals in his last four international matches.
Bergwijn has scored his country’s first goal of the game in four successive matches. He was first goalscorer in three of them, including against Belgium last weekend.
To Score a Penalty: Netherlands
The Netherlands have been awarded five penalties in their last nine matches, with star striker Depay converting all five of them.
