Wayne Rooney Career Achievements, Records and Stats

Wayne Rooney has taken the next step in his managerial career by becoming the new head coach of MLS team DC United.

Rooney impressed in his first at Derby County, where he almost kept the club in the Championship despite them being deducted 12 points for entering administration and nine points for financial regularities.

However successful he is as a manager, it will take some doing to surpass his achievements as a player.

Starting out at Everton as a 16-year-old boy wonder in 2002, Rooney won multiple major trophies after joining Manchester United and broke several prestigious records with England.

These are all the key numbers from his remarkable playing career, which ended in January 2021 following spells with Everton (again) and the two clubs he has since gone on to manage, DC United and Derby.

Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United Records

  • Rooney is Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer with 253 goals. He overtook Sir Bobby Charlton’s previous record of 249, which had stood for 45 years, in January 2017.
  • Rooney is sixth on the list of all-time Manchester United appearances, having played 559 games for the club.
  • Rooney joined Manchester United aged 18 in 2004 for £27m – then a world-record fee for a player under 20.
  • Rooney won multiple major trophies at Manchester United, including five Premier Leagues, three EFL Cups, one Champions League, one FA Cup, one World Club Cup and one Europa League, plus three FA Community Shields.
  • Rooney scored 183 Premier League goals for Manchester United – the most by a player for one club in Premier League history.
  • Rooney is Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer in European competitions with 39 goals.
  • Rooney is the all-time leading scorer in the Manchester derby (Manchester United v Manchester City) with 11 goals.

Wayne Rooney’s England Records

  • Rooney is England’s all-time leading scorer with 53 goals. He overtook Sir Bobby Charlton’s previous record of 49, which had stood for 45 years, in September 2015.
  • Rooney is England’s most-capped outfield player with 120 caps. He is second on the list of all-time appearances behind goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who won 125 caps.
  • Rooney is the second-youngest player to play for England. He was the youngest when he made his debut in a friendly against Australia in February 2003, aged 17 years and 111 days. His record was beaten by Theo Walcott in 2006.
  • Rooney is the youngest player to score for England, doing so against Macedonia in September 2003, aged 17 years and 317 days.
  • Rooney represented England in six major international tournaments. He played at three World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014) and three European Championships (2004, 2012, 2016).
  • Rooney was made England captain in 2014, replacing Steven Gerrard. He captained England 23 times, including at Euro 2016.
  • Rooney retired from international football in August 2017, before coming out of retirement to make his final England appearance in a friendly against France in 2018.

Wayne Rooney’s Premier League Records
