Southampton have sacked manager Nathan Jones. The Welshman, 49, leaves the club after just 95 days in charge, making him Saints’ shortest serving manager of the Premier League era.

The former Luton Town manager, who replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl in November, leaves with Southampton bottom of the table after losing to Wolves, who were reduced to 10 men, on Saturday. Under Jones the Saints lost eight out of nine in the Premier League, and lost four home matches in succession.

There were signs in January that Jones was turning things around. Victories over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, Manchester City in the EFL Cup and relegation rivals Everton in the league suggested that things were on an upward trajectory. However, since those positive results things have gone badly for Southampton and for Jones. Supporters greeted Saturdays’ defeat with a chorus of boos and the Southampton board subsequently decided to relieve Jones of his duty.

First-team coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan have also left the club, while lead coach Ruben Selles will take charge of next Saturday’s Premier League fixture at Chelsea.
