Saturday evening sees Atletico Madrid make the short journey across the city to the Bernabeu for the Madrid derby. Real Madrid come into the match on the back of a fantastic Champions League win over Liverpool at Anfield. They have, however, ground to make up domestically. Los Blancos lie second in La Liga, eight points adrift of leaders Barcelona.
Real Madrid have won their last five matches in all competitions. This includes their midweek Champions League win, their two games at the Club World Cup and two league games. Ferland Mendy (hamstring) misses out while David Alaba and Rodrydo are doubtful after picking up injuries midweek. Aurelien Tchouameni has returned to training after a bout of ‘flu and could feature. The big games are coming thick and fast for Carlo Ancelloti’s side. They face Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final in midweek, with the return leg against Liverpool also on the horizon.
Atleti have had a slightly underwhelming campaign when set against the standards they have set themselves under Diego Simeone. They are currently fourth in the table, 10 points behind their city rivals. However, the Colchoneros are unbeaten in their last six La Liga matches, winning four, and are unbeaten in their last four in all competitions. They boast the fourth best away record in the league. Rodrigo de Paul and Thomas Lemar miss out through injury, while Stefan Savic returns after suspension.
Atleti have not beaten Real Madrid in the Bernabeu since 2016. Los Blancos, unbeaten at home in the league in 2022-23, beat Atletico 2-1 in the reverse game at Wanda Metropolitano earlier this season, while they were 2-0 winners at the Bernabeu in this fixture last season.
