The Favorites for Top Player in Copa America 2021

There certainly is no lack of players to choose from for this category, but let’s start with the no-brainers.

Lionel Messi is currently the main favourite for the award. The 33-year old Argentinian has still not managed to win Copa America, and it’s certainly something the Barcelona star would like to add to his fantastic CV. The last time Argentina won Copa America was all the way back in 1993 when for example Gabriel Batistuta and Diego Simeone were some of the stars for the nation.

There is a long list of contenders for the Copa America MVP prize, however, and it won’t come easy for Lionel Messi. The second-hand favourite is without a doubt Neymar in the Brazilian squad. The technical genius will also be extra motivated to bring Brazil far in Copa America, as he missed out on the previous championship due to an injury. Despite that Brazil went on to win Copa America 2019, and the chances for a repeat look great.

Behind Neymar and Messi there are a whole bunch of players who could get involved in becoming voted the best player in Copa America 2021, especially if their respective nations make it to at least a final. Uruguay's Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani might both be 34 years old, but they still have a lot left to give.

The duo also tends to perform at max level in the national jersey, and could without a doubt get involved in the MVP discussion this summer. Suarez has scored over 60 goals for his national team, and Cavani has hit over 50. That speaks volumes of their capability, and chance to bring Uruguay far in Copa America 2021.

Best Defenders/Goalkeepers in Copa America 2021

It’s important to note that the MVP of Copa America has not always gone in the way of an offensive player even if they are highly favoured to triumph. The last time a defender won it was actually the most recent time, as Dani Alves from Brazil won the award. A goalkeeper winning it dates back to 1993 when the Argentinian, Sergio Goycochea, brought home the individual award as well as the most recent gold for his nation.

Among the defensive stars in Copa America, we can find two main favourites, but also a few outsiders. In Brazil, we can find Chelsea’s Thiago Silva as the main favourite to snatch the prize of MVP in Copa America 2021, but Marquinhos is another good option considering his great season in PSG. Argentina also has a couple of interesting options to look at, namely Nicolás Otamendi and Nicolás Tagliafico.

A quick look at the goalkeepers able to involve themselves in the most valuable player discussion, we have to look at David Ospina from Napoli. The 32-year old keeper is a key player for Colombia, who’s also seen as one of the outsiders to contend for a Copa America title. If Colombia is to surprise the favourites, Ospina needs to be at his best, and if they manage it’s not unthinkable he could become the MVP of Copa America 2021.

The Outsiders for Best Player in Copa America 2021

A few other players to look out for in Copa America 2021 are Leandro Paredes (Argentina) from PSG, Arthur (Brazil) from Juventus, together with the Colombian offensive stars Luis Muriel and Duván Zapata. The Colombian duo has been incredibly successful in Atalanta the past years and is looking to do the same in their national jersey.

We would also like to mention a couple of the young up-and-comers in Copa America 2021. The two names that stick out the most are Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior and his teammate Federico Valverde. Both players have at a young age shown they belong on the world stage, and they are ready to show it once more in Copa America 2021. Vinícius Júnior has the advantage of playing for favourites Brazil, while Valverde could be a great underdog bet if you believe Uruguay will make it far, or even win it all.

Who do you believe will become the most valuable player in Copa America 2021? As it usually goes we will most likely see the MVP play for the winning nation in Copa America, and if you believe Brazil or Argentina will hold up to the expectations the selection becomes easier. Then again, choosing a player from one of the underdog teams is lucrative as the odds quickly skyrocket, but we have to remember that Brazil and Argentina’s track record in Copa America are far from fantastic.
