Brazil - Overview & Facts
The host nation has reached a final just like expected after 1-0 against Peru in the semi-final. It was however not a magical show we got to see from Tite and his men. The first half was dominated by Brazil and they also managed to take a 1-0 lead. The lead led to a more passive Brazil not willing to take any risks, and this gave Peru a way back into the match. At the end of the day they didn’t manage more than a few half chances, and the Brazilians going to the final was well deserved.
Brazil being the favourites in the final is not much of a discussion, they should be. The question is if it hasn’t swung a bit too much in their favor though? The home advantage is a part of this, but with no crowd allowed we are not sure if the advantage is actually that big at all.

In the match against Peru, Tite started with an offensive 4-5-1 formation where Casemiro and Fred took the defensive responsibility in the midfield. The trio of Everton, Paqueta and Neymar positioned above them, and on top we saw Richardlison from the start. He was later substituted out for Real Madrid’s coming superstar, Junior Vinicius.
If Messi is the massive star for Argentina, then Neymar is the man of the talk for Brazil. The 29-year old forward was once again a big part of the success as Brazil knocked out Peru. His assist to the 1-0 goal was a real treat that will be on highlight reels for years to come. Neymar is also a more dangerous goalscorer than Messi for their national teams. In 110 matches, Neymar has scored 68 goals for a 0.62 average, which is slightly higher than Messi. At Copa America 2021 the Argentinian still holds a point lead with 4+5 compared to Neymar at 2+3.
Brazil’s Five Latest:
- Brazil - Peru 1-0
- Brazil - Chile 1-0
- Brazil - Ecuador 1-1
- Brazil - Colombia 2-1
- Brazil - Peru 4-0
After winning 1-0 in both their quarter and semi-final, Brazil now stands in front of another Copa America final, the 21st to be exact. Tite has seen his team score 12 goals only concede 2 this far in the tournament, and it sure shows how dominant they are in South America.
Expected Starting 11:
Ederson; Danilo, Marquinhos, Thiago Silva, Lodi; Casemiro; Fred, Paquetá; Everton, Neymar, Richarlison.
We expect more or less the same eleven from the start as against Peru, where Gabriel Jesus was missing due to the red card he took against Chile in the quarter-final. This is also true for the upcoming final, as Jesus remains suspended.
Argentina - Overview & Facts
Lionel Messi is only one match from finally getting his hand on a major title with his Argentina. The final will however present the biggest obstacle they have faced thus far, and also the first time Argentina will enter as the underdog. If there is someone who can stop the Brazilians' dominance in Copa America 2021, it is them though. The Argentinians are in the hunt for their 15th Copa title, and this is a massive match for Messi especially. The magician has turned 34 years old and this could be one of the last, if not the last chance to add the most precious of metals in the cabinet with the Argentinian national team.

We might be bringing Lionel Messi up a lot, but this year he definitely has made a good case for that. Before the final the superstar has scored 4 goals and assisted another 5, making him the most productive player in the tournament. But even if Messi has been outstanding, there are several other players in Argentina to highlight.
One of them is Messi’s forward partner: Lautaro Martinez, who has scored three goals so far. Worth noting is that he also scored Argentina’s only goal in the semi-final against Colombia, eventually good enough to bring the match to penalties and a win. Martinez is red hot, and he has scored in three matches a row - maybe he will be the hero in the Copa America final instead of Neymar or Messi?
Argentina’s Five Latest:
- Argentina - Colombia 2-1 (after penalties)
- Argentina - Ecuador 3-0
- Bolivia - Argentina 1-4
- Argentina - Paraguay 1-0
- Argentina - Uruguay 1-0
Argentina have scored 11 goals at Copa America 2021, out which 7 have come through Messi or Martinez. Three goals have been conceded, which is a great track record for Emiliano Martinez and the centre back lock with Pezzella and Otamendi. Can they keep that up against a deadly Brazilian team though?
Expected Starting 11:
E Martinez; Molina, Pezzella, Otamendi, Acuna; Paredes, De Paul, Lo Celso; Messi, González, L Martinez
Stars like Di Maria and Aguero have not been in the starting eleven more than once at Copa America, and much speaks for both starting on the bench against Brazil too. The trio of Messi, Gonzalez and Martinez seems to be the offensive trio that head coach, Scaloni, prefers.
